Red Raiders Defeat Buffaloes, 66-56

The Texas Tech Red Raiders (12-4, 2-3) overcame a poor offensive performance to defeat the Colorado Buffaloes (12-6, 2-3). The win gives Texas Tech Head Coach Bob Knight his 799th career victory. Andre Emmett led all scorers with 19 points.

Colorado started off the game quickly by taking an early 8-2 lead. The Red Raiders answered with a 21-2 run to take a 13 point lead. Texas Tech was able to maintain this lead, taking a 37-26 lead into the half.

It looked like the Red Raiders might run win the game easily, but Colorado went on an 8-0 run with just over 10 minutes left to make it a 3-point game. Texas Tech held off the Colorado attack to win by a final score of 66-56.

Offense

Offense continues to be an area of concern for the Red Raiders. It was good to see more balance to the offense, but the total output was still disappointing. Andre Emmett led all scorers with 19 points. Will Chavis had a fine performance, scoring 18 points. Chavis shot well from the outside, making 4 of 7 three pointers. Nick Valdez was the only other player in double figures with 12 points. The most disturbing part of this game was that the Red Raiders did not score a field goal for almost 8 minutes during one stretch in the second half. If that happens against any of the top teams in the Big 12 Texas Tech will not be able to win. Patience and shot selection are still in need of improvement. This problem has to be solved soon if the Red Raiders are going to finish in the top half of the conference.

Defense

The Red Raiders' defense deserves most of the credit for this win. Texas Tech held Colorado to 26.4% from the field. Kasib Powell had the best individual game on defense, getting 3 steals and a block. The defense has been pretty consistent over the past few games. The Red Raiders need to continue to play good defense until the offense gets back on track.
