Lady Raiders Defeat Kansas 84-57

The Texas Tech Lady Raiders (18-2, 7-1) finished off the first half of conference play with a victory over the Kansas Jayhawks (9-10, 2-6). Plenette Pierson led all scorers with 29 points to lead the Lady Raiders to victory.

This game was closely played for the first 10 minutes, but then the Lady Raiders used a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 23-14. Texas Tech finished the half with an 11-2 run to take a 38-22 lead at the half.

The Lady Raiders never gave Kansas a chance to get back in the game in the second half. Texas Tech continued to slowly build their lead for the rest of the game. The Lady Raiders won by a final score of 84-57.

Offense

It is almost impossible to describe how good a week Plenette Pierson has had for the Lady Raiders. Pierson came off a 32-point performance on Tuesday to score 29 points against Kansas. In the past couple of games, Pierson has been playing on a different level than the other players on the court. I'm not sure if there is a better player in the Big 12 right now. Jia Perkins scored 13 points in the game. Miklannet Tennal scored 9 points, on 3 three pointers, in a homecoming of sorts. The Lady Raiders did a good job dealing with the variety of defensive looks that Kansas presented. Until someone can shut down Pierson, the Lady Raiders will continue to enjoy offensive success.

Defense

The Lady Raiders continued to play great defense in conference play. Texas Tech held Kansas to 32.7% from the floor. The Lady Raiders also forced 18 turnovers in the game. This was one of those games where the Lady Raiders' quickness was simply too much for Kansas to overcome. This led to Kansas taking some questionable shots on the offensive ends. It was nice to see the defensive intensity for the entire 40 minutes in today's game. That is exactly the kind of effort Texas Tech will need when they face the top teams in the Big 12 later this season.
