Porter Talks Texas Tech

After learning that Ruffin McNeill would not be retained as part of the Texas Tech football coaching staff, DB Tre Porter decided to reopen his commitment. He traveled to Lubbock over the weekend to meet new head coach Tommy Tuberville and his coaching staff. What did Tre think of his visit? RaiderPower.com has the latest...

When defensive back Tre'Vante Porter decommitted from the Red Raiders last week, it was a substantial blow to the impressive recruiting class of 2010 that Texas Tech had worked to put together.

Despite his decommitment, Porter said Texas Tech was still an option for him, and he took an official visit to Lubbock this weekend to learn more about new head coach Tommy Tuberville and his coaching staff.

"It went good. I got to meet the coaches, and they were really nice guys. I already knew a lot about the school from previous visits, so my mission for this visit was to get to know the coaching staff.

"I felt like I got an idea about them. They seemed like nice guys, but I really don't know. I've got to really sit down and think about everything before I make my decision."

Tre had a chance to sit down with Coach Tuberville and came away impressed with his goals and intensity.

"I met Coach Tuberville, and he's a very motivated person. He talked a lot about his goals for the team. His main goal is for Texas Tech to be a BCS contender and he's very focused on that."

The main thing that stood out to Porter about Coach Tuberville was his emphasis on improving the Red Raiders' defense.

"I liked that the new coaches are going to focus more of defense. I think that in the past [Texas Tech] gave up too many points on defense and that's why they lost games. So I think their focus on defense will be good."

Now that he has taken an official visit and had a chance to meet the new coaching staff, Porter says that the Red Raiders are definitely still in contention.

"I would say Texas Tech is standing up pretty well against the other schools I'm considering. I've got a top four of Oklahoma, TCU, Arizona, and Texas Tech. It's a tie between those four.

"I think I would still fit in if I decided to go to Texas Tech. I like the school. I'm not just going to be playing football, so I've got to look into other things also and make sure that I like the school and the program and everything."

January is going to be a busy month for Tre, who still plans to make trips to his other three top schools.

"I'm going to visit TCU this weekend and Arizona next weekend. I'm going to try to work OU in sometime during the week as well."

Porter says that he is unsure when he will make a final decision, but he'd like to have everything wrapped up before February 3.

"I'm just going to be taking it week by week. I'll probably be making a decision a few days prior to signing day."
