A shout out to JerryMoore (screen name, not the coach) for sending me this photo of a 1983 Texas Tech mug. You can have your mug featured on the Morning Raider by sending me your username and a picture of your mug to email@example.com.
Fall practices finally begin today for Texas Tech football, the first of 22 practices before the first week of game preparation begins on Aug. 30.
Making a change to the schedule, Tech coaches will open today and tomorrow's practices to the media and public before closing practices on Monday. Fans wishing to get a glimpse of the team are encouraged to get out to Jones AT&T Stadium at 3 p.m. today and 3:45 p.m. tomorrow. Other practices and scrimmages may become open as the weeks go on.
A total of 104 student-athletes reported for football practices yesterday on official reporting day, including 31 newcomers to the Red Raiders. Of the 31 new players, 25 are true freshman and six are transfers.
Keep An Eye
One newcomer that could be interesting to watch as the fall unfolds is freshman defensive back Tre'vante Porter. He helped Carl Albert High School win the Class 5A championship in Oklahoma last season, totaling 115 tackles and two interceptions.
Porter appears to possess a natural ability for the position and may be just what defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson needs to help boost the Tech secondary — one of the bigger question marks heading into this season.
Returning letterman LaRon Moore is still rehabbing after he had surgery on his leg during the spring to repair a fractured bone.
Moore is not expected to be one of two starters on the outside corners but will be the primary inside defensive back on nickel and dime coverages. Sophomore Will Ford is expected to be the frontrunner at one cornerback position and redshirt freshman Jarvis Phillips will compete with sophomore D.J. Johnson for the other spot.
Moore and wideout EJ Celestie are not on the 104-man reporting roster.
