It's been way too long without a Morning Raider. Now that fall camp has ended and practices will be at a regular afternoon time, you can look for the Morning Raider each day on the RaiderPower.com homepage, Monday-Saturday.
CHAT IT UP
We will be doing an exclusive chat over at FOX Sports Southwest on Tuesday evening to talk about the upcoming game against SMU. There you will be able to ask myself, RP.com publisher and Texas Tech Sports Radio producer Steve Pitts and other contributing writers questions about the season and upcoming game against SMU. Stay tuned each day for more information about the chat. It will also be advertised during the Rangers game that night.
MORE ON MYERS
I will have more from Gerald Myers himself later on today about his decision to step down as Tech athletics director.
Myers announced Thursday that he will step down as athletics director at the end of the school year (May 31). He leaves after spending the last 55 years around Lubbock and Texas Tech as a student-athlete, coach and administrator, including the last 14 as athletics director.
Myers said he would spend the next year helping ensure that Tech is in the best situation with the new TV-revenue sharing agreement with the new 10-team Big 12 while Tech chancellor Kent Hance selects a committee to conduct a nationwide search for his replacement.
Although many will forever link Myers and the fall of the Mike Lech regime together, I think the importance of what he did from day one as athletics director in picking up a program in severe trouble with the NCAA and bringing it to where it is today will speak louder than anything else.
Be sure to check out the other stories on the Scout.com and FOX Sports websites.
Scout.com's Miller Safrit talks about Hargrave Military Academy, one of the country's best post-graduate institutions that have helped numerous student-athletes over the years. He has a great interview with new head coach Troy Davis who just recently took over for Robert Prunty. Prunty, of course, left Hargrave to take over as the outside linebackers coach at Tech.
Speaking of the 2010 season, FOX Sports Southwest's Keith Fletcher gives his take on some of the top storylines to follow during the first week — any guess on the No. 1 spot?
BACK TO PRACTICE
Tech will practice this afternoon for the first of three consecutive practices before getting another day off on Monday while the coaches put together their first game plan for SMU. Tech will then begin its first game week on Tuesday to prepare for the 2:30 p.m. kick against the Mustangs on Sept. 5. Video and practice report will be up later tonight.
