Oklahoma States Edges No. 8 Texas, 4-3

The No. 8 Longhorns’ (18-9, 3-1 Big 12) ninth inning rally fell short at Oklahoma State (13-7) Saturday as the Cowboys held on for a 4-3 win. Texas scored two, one-out runs in the final frame but could not bring the winning the run across.

Danny Muegge saw his record fall to 4-3 despite striking out a career-best seven and walking none in six innings of work. Texas placed at least one runner on base in eight of nine frames, scattering seven hits. Omar Quintanilla went 2-for-4 while Taylor Teagarden tallied two hits in three at-bats while scoring one run and driving in a pair.

OSU’s Jason Jaramillo broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer to right center field. Texas finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when first baseman Curtis Thigpen delivered a two-out, round tripper to make it a 2-1 affair.

But the Pokes responded with a pair of two-out doubles (John Urick, Jaramillo) in the bottom of the sixth to rebuild the two-run advantage, 3-1. Jaramillo's sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the eighth resulted in an unearned run and a 4-1 Cowboys' lead.

Texas rallied in the ninth when J.D. Reininger reached on an error with one down and Teagarden followed him with his second home run of the year. But Daniel Rew came on in relief to preserve the win for the Pokes in their Big 12 opener.

The second game of the three-game series is set for 2 p.m. (CST) Sunday.
