There weren't many bright spots last season for Garland Lakeview Centennial. Jarvis Baxter was one of them. The Patriots finished the season 1-9 overall, but it wasn't because the sophomore didn't do his part.
At 5-11 and 165 pounds, Baxter earned 1st team all-district honors and made sophomore 1st team all-state. In ten games, he recorded just under 800 yards and hauled in seven touchdown catches.
"This year we are going to be working hard to make the playoffs. That is the goal this season," said Baxter to Scout.com. "Last year, we just weren't being led in the right direction by the upper classmen. The leaders this year are more mature and are focused more on football. They are ready to get some wins under our belts. They are ready to do whatever it takes."
While schools have pegged Baxter a player to watch for the 2013 class, he has not had much contact with coaches at this point and doesn't plan to until the start of his junior season.
"I have been getting some letters, including one from Notre Dame and Texas A&M. But most schools said they can't talk to me until I'm a junior," said Baxter. "I would say Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Texas, Baylor, Texas Tech, Kansas, Arkansas, and Florida will be the schools that I'm most interested in at first.
"Right now I'm planning to the Baylor camp in June and my friend got invited to the Oklahoma State camp, so he wants me to go with him to that. Also, I'm planning on going to the Texas and Texas A&M camp."
Baxter moved to Texas two years ago from Virginia Beach, but has adjusted to the area quickly. He describes himself as: "confidant, maybe a little cocky, and just an all-around ball player. I like to do it all."
This offseason, he will be focused on improving his explosiveness off the line and route running.
How does he feel about Texas at this point>
"I really think Mack Brown is a great coach. I feel that I would excel and fit into their football program. I also like the academics there."
