Samples building UT relationship

Skyline sophomore wide receiver Ra'Shaad Samples already has three offers. Will he be in the running for a UT offer next year? The 2013 prospect is already talking with the Longhorns.

The Texas Longhorns haven't been afraid to look at Skyline HS (Dallas, TX) for wide receivers.

Freshman Mike Davis made huge contributions in 2010, starting in five games. Soon to be senior Thomas Johnson committed in February.

Then there is 2013 prospect Ra'Shaad Samples.

After six touchdowns and nearly 18 yards a catch in 2010, the sophomore is already on the Longhorns radar.

"I talk to Coach Wyatt and he was really impressed with my ball skills. I think I have a pretty good relationship with the Texas guys and like the coaching staff," said Samples to Scout.com. "I'm very interested in Texas. I feel like I can play inside or outside receiver. I'm fast and shifty and think one of my strengths is my route running. This summer I'm trying to gain weight, maybe get to 185 or 190 before it's over. "

At 5-foot-11, Samples played at 175 pounds last season. With Skyline's tradition of producing D-1 talent, it shouldn't be any surprise the sophomore already has a few verbal offers.

"Definitely ones from Texas Tech and Kansas State. I wasn't for sure about Kansas. I hadn't really talked to them much, but I called them this morning at 10 o'clock after getting a number," said Samples. "They were letting me know that I was one of their top guys and that they would be really strong on me for the 2013 class. They wanted me to know their offer was strong.

"I feel very blessed. I try to work hard when nobody is looking. On the weekends, when everyone is sitting at home or going to parties and stuff, I make this a 24/7 thing."

So what is Samples looking for in his school?

"Of course I want a place I can get on the field. A place that I can fit in early and make contributions. I also want to go somewhere where I have a coach who will challenge me."
