Taylor Teagarden and Joe Ferin each went 2-for-3 on the afternoon and accounted for two of Texas' three runs in what was otherwise a pitchers duel. But the Wildcats hurt their cause by committing four errors, while UT was charged with one fielding error.
Dustin Majewskis RBI single scored Tim Moss from third as Texas jumped to the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Moss reached with a single to right field before advancing to second and third on a stolen base and errant throw by the KSU catcher. One inning later, Texas increased its lead to 2-0 as Ferin laid down a bunt single to score Teagarden who led off with a single and then reached third on another KSU fielding error.
That score remained until the sixth when Pat Maloneys two-out, RBI double scored Brad Anzman to cut the Texas lead in half at 2-1. The Wildcats then put two runners on board with two out in the top of the seventh before Howell quelled the rally.
The Horns would add another run in the bottom of the seventh after second baseman Marc Chabots errant throw allowed Teagarden to score from second.
Texas goes for the sweep, 1 p.m., Sunday, at the Disch.
