Signee Fails to Qualify

The Texas defense received some bad news Tuesday when a key recruit failed to qualify.

Quincy Russell, a four-star defensive tackle and U.S. Army All-American Bowl participant, received word that his failure to qualify was finalized Tuesday. According to Gary Green, who coached Russell at San Antonio Sam Houston, the Texas staff has counseled with Russell about choosing the correct junior college, likely one within the Lone Star State. Green said it was too early to project which JUCO Russell would pick.

Green said the staff also told Russell that he would have a place with the Longhorns after his two years were up.

Russell's failure to qualify leaves the Longhorns exactly at the 85 scholarship limit for the 2011-2012 school year.

The Longhorns have three defensive tackle commitments in the 2012 class in Malcom Brown, Paul Boyette and Alex Norman, and six other defensive tackles due to be on next year's roster. But that doesn't mean that they're done at the position. The Longhorns are still recruiting Russell's former teammate, Javonte Magee, and have begun to show interest in Donald Hopkins of Lago Vista and Glen Antoine of Round Rock.
