Counting Down the Big 12's Top Players

One by one, we count down the Big 12's top players. At No. 29 is Ronnell Lewis, Oklahoma's headhunter of a defensive end.

29) Ronnell Lewis, junior DE/LB, Oklahoma

Just how hard of a hitter is Ronnell Lewis? Just ask "Josh", a running back who crossed Lewis in middle school. Ever since middle school, Lewis has been laying YouTube worthy hits, crushing the competition and making the crowd go "ooohhh."

He continued that trend as a true freshman at Oklahoma, tying for the team lead with 11 special teams tackles, several of them making their way onto the popular video channel. He also earned a start in the Sun Bowl at linebacker, finishing with six tackles, 0.5 for loss, one fumble forced and a pass deflection.

As a sophomore, he was able to make plays on a more regular basis. Originally listed as the team's SAM linebacker, Lewis transitioned into more of a linebacker/rush-end hybrid with the Sooners playing more nickel sets. He started the final four games of the season at that position, making five tackles and 3.5 sacks. He also intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, and had three other quarterback hurries.

Now that he's had a full offseason to adjust to his new position, Lewis should again be vying for highlight hits, with most of these directed at opposing quarterbacks. Blessed with tremendous short-area power and great athleticism, he'll likely make a bid as one of the league's best pass rushers and overall defensive playmakers in 2011.

2010 Stats: 37 tackles, five tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one interception, one touchdown, one fumble recovery, three quarterback hurries, three passes broken up
