Counting Down the Big 12's Top Players

One player at a time, we count down the Big 12's top players. At No. 27 is Texas A&M cover corner Coryell Judie.

27) Coryell Judie, senior CB, Texas A&M

In two of the last three seasons, Judie has intercepted at least four passes. In the other, he didn't play because of an injury.

Coaches often like to talk about instincts at defensive back. Plenty of players can run, and it's somewhat more rare to find a player who can backpedal and turn and run fluidly. But it's a rare package indeed that includes the overall athleticism needed to play cornerback, and the instincts to generate turnovers despite often not facing that many opportunities.

Count Judie in that last category. As a sophomore at Fort Scott Community College in 2008, Judie showcased his athleticism by serving as an elite return man, then earned NJCAA All-American honors at cornerback after picking off six passes and breaking up seven more passes.

That effort made Judie a key pickup for the Aggies, and a likely immediate impact player. But before he could get started, Judie suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in fall camp, forcing him to redshirt.

When he came back in 2010, he made the most of his time off, picking off four passes and averaging 30.2 yards per kickoff return while running back two kicks for scores. He defended another eight passes, breaking up four and earning second-team All-Big 12 honors from the league's coaches.

At 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, Judie combines physicality with nice athleticism, two things that have drawn the attention of NFL scouts. In a league that might be short on legitimate cover corners, Judie ranks among the top two or three players at his position. And that's a ranking that could go up as the season progresses.

2010 Stats: 57 tackles, two for loss, four interceptions, eight passes defended, four passes broken up, 20 kickoff returns, 605 yards, 30.2 yards per return, two return touchdowns
