Thursday 7-on-7 Players to Watch

The FoxSportsSouthwest State 7-on-7 Tournament begins Thursday with the Division II (smaller school) teams. Here are five players for Texas fans to watch in the opening day of competition.

Dominique Wheeler, 2012 WR, Crockett — Texas extended an offer to Wheeler at the Longhorns' first Junior Day, but decided to go their separate ways once they landed speedy slot Thomas Johnson, and later, Cayleb Jones. Still, Wheeler is a top-10 talent in-state and an explosive player who is taking his talents to Texas Tech.

Colin Janice, 2013 CB, West Orange-Stark — It appears that Texas will be taking a pass on Longhorn legacy Justin Thomas, but that might not be true for Janice. Both are undersized cornerbacks with wheels. The difference is that Janice could be among the top couple cornerback targets for 2013.

Ty Slanina, 2013 QB/ATH, East Bernard — Slanina is one of the state's most exciting players for 2013, something that probably won't come across on the field Thursday, as he'll be playing quarterback. Still, he'll be worth watching to see how his passing is coming along, to see if he's a future quarterback or an athlete who will get plugged in elsewhere.

Kevin Vaccaro, 2012 CB, Brownwood — Like Thomas, Vaccaro likely isn't getting a Texas offer. And also like Thomas, he's a Longhorn legacy, thanks to older brother Kenny. Kevin played well at Texas's summer camp, but not well enough to merit an offer in a tight class. Still, with a strong senior year, it's not unreasonable to think that he could potentially play himself into a Big 12 offer.

Torii Hunter, Jr., 2013 ATH, Prosper — A legacy for a different sport, Hunter Jr. takes after his dad in that he's an explosive athlete with speed. He's interesting to project because of his height (he's listed at 6-foot), which would make him a taller cornerback if he chooses to play that position.
