Nike Camp Report: Brian Orakpo

Houston Lamar DE Brian Orakpo has been a prospect we've been keeping tabs on the last couple of months and for good reason. He made his Nike Camp debut this past weekend and excited quite a few big name programs with a standout camp performance.

Orakpo, a solid 6-3.5/6-4, 215-pounder, dazzled with a 4.56 forty, 4.2 shuttle and ridiculous 37-inch vertical. He also recorded 18 bench reps showing some strength, especially this early in his development. But the sack-artist from Houston wasn't necessarily impressed with his day.

"I think I did well out there, but I could have done a little better," Orakpo said.

"I'm just glad I attended the camp," District 18-5A's top pass rusher said. "Just really enjoyed it and got a lot of information including how I might go about dieting and improving my forty time, plus the coaching I received was very beneficial to me."

And the kid apparently improved his stock with several teams as the phone has been ringing off the hook.

"At this point, I have offers from Missouri, Iowa State and U of H," Orakpo said. "Stanford has really picked it up and said they want to offer me after I take my SAT June 7th. Notre Dame is really coming after me too, but haven't said anything about a scholarship offer yet. They did say they were going to be sending me some more information though."

Stats: Lamar doesn't chart sacks, but Orakpo said he registered 12-14 as a junior.

Classroom: 3.5 GPA

Strength: 290-pound bench, 400-pound squat.

A couple of months ago, Orakpo had this to say about an early top five: "Well, I'm definitely open and will consider the schools that offer me more than any other. But I would have to say, Texas, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Iowa State and Oklahoma".

Top 5 today?

"I really like Texas, Colorado, Iowa State, Stanford -- especially their academics -- and Texas A&M."

The schools that have yet to offer better get on the stick because after his recent camp display, he'll garner even more attention. Kid's a prototype weak-side DE and boy can he bring the jets.
