Friday Night Lights, Week One

From Johnathan Gray's huge week to Alex De La Torre's efficient one, we track Texas commitments and potential recruiting targets.

Gray runs crazy

You know it's a good day when you have nearly 300 rushing yards and four touchdowns … in the first half. That's precisely what Gray did Friday as Aledo defeated Weatherford 50-7.

Gray finished with 336 yards and five touchdowns on just 15 carries, taking his obscene season numbers to 42 rushes for 555 yards and nine touchdowns in two games.

Good time at Herbstreit

Longhorn commitments showed out at the Kirk Herbstreit Classic in Cowboys Stadium on Monday.

DeSoto teammates Curtis Riser and Bryson Echols were key parts of a 63-0 blowout win over defending Class 4A Oklahoma State champion Oklahoma City Frederick Douglass. Echols helped to key a defense that allowed 50 yards of total offense — including just 15 passing yards — for the game. To make matters worse, Douglass put up 33 of those rushing yards in the fourth quarter.

Dallas Skyline teammates Peter Jinkens and Thomas Johnson also played well in their game, a 32-20 win over Cocoa (Fla.). Jinkens rushed for two touchdowns and helped to key a defense that allowed just 39 rushing yards on 30 carries.

Johnson also scored twice, once on a two-point conversion and once on an 18-yard touchdown play.

Alex De La Torre shines in limited action

How do you make 11 defensive snaps count? By making three tackles, including one for loss, on those snaps. De La Torre also caught a touchdown pass in the game for Denton Ryan, which led 35-0 in the first quarter and coasted to an easy win.

Corey Coleman has another nice night

The Longhorns look like they'll take a longer look at Richardson Pearce wide receiver/cornerback Corey Coleman. Coleman, you might remember, made waves by ranking as the fastest player at The Opening, clocking in the 4.32 range. That performance made the Longhorn commitments in attendance stand up and take notice, and they brought word back to the Texas staff.

But Coleman is more than just an athlete. He caught 11 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown of 25 yards last Friday night.

2013 Quick Look

Top offensive line prospect Jake Raulerson helped Celina to a 34-33 victory over Prestonwood Christian in a game that also featured tight end Christian Morgan. Raulerson helped Celina pile up 380 rushing yards in the game. Morgan caught two passes for 50 yards in the losing effort.

Chevoski Collins, a 2013 wide receiver target, showed off both his arm and his legs in a 41-21 win over Jasper. Collins passed for 77- and 39-yard touchdowns, while running for touchdowns of 12 and one yards.

Rosenberg Terry coasted to a 33-3 victory over Waller, with Derrick Griffin finding the end zone on two of his three catches. He scored from 39 and seven yards out, catching three passes for 50 yards in total.

And running back target James White helped Pearland Dawson beat Conroe Oak Ridge 52-20 by rushing for 207 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, while adding a 33-yard touchdown catch.
