Team USA Coach Talks Chase Abbington

Team USA coach Steve Specht talks about Missouri commitment Chase Abbington.

Over his two weeks with the USA U-19 team, Chase Abbington showed himself to be among the team's best, and most versatile athletes. A running back in high school, Abbington played linebacker for Team USA before sliding back to a centerfielder role as a free safety.

Team USA coach Steve Specht said he was impressed with Abbington as an athlete and player, but said he'll likely play the other side of the ball in college.

"I think Chase is going to be a running back down the road," Specht said. "He's so athletic. But I tell you what: as a roving free safety, he looks the part. He can run, he can jump, he's a tough kid, but I think … he's going to be a running back down the road.

"The problem … well, I don't know that it's a problem, when we saw Chase's film, he jumps out. He just jumps off the film at you as a running back and as an athlete, but we had already selected our three running backs," Specht said. "But we wanted to give him an opportunity to come in and play defense, and he jumped at it.

"But I think that his future is at running back," Specht said. "Boy, he's a long strider, he's an awful big body, who knows how big he's going to get."
