"I'm very excited," Joe said. "It's a great pick up for our class. We just keep adding to our class, and now we have a great lineman, somebody who will be a big part of our line. With his teammate Daniel Gresham at running back, that's a nice little combo for us."
The class started with Joe, a soft-handed wide receiver prospect who actually played a pretty good quarterback for Abilene Cooper this year.
"Going through the season, I was able to make that transition from receiver to quarterback, and as a team, we were doing well and getting better," Joe said.
That season came to an end in the playoffs, but that didn't stop Joe from impressing and leading Cooper to a nice season. And Joe stayed after practice to work on his hands and route-running.
"After practice, the receivers have a little circuit that they do, so I'd jump in and do the drills with them," Joe said. "And sometimes, when other guys were throwing the ball, I'd run some routes. I'm trying to stay ready as a receiver."
"Growing up, I've always been a big Texas fan," Joe said. "I grew up wearing the burnt orange. When I got the offer, it was always a dream. You can't pass that up. That's why I was so quick to commit."
In recent classes, starting with Connor Brewer and continuing this year with Jake Raulerson, the Longhorns have tapped a prospect early to serve as the "bell cow," with that players serving to try and herd in other top prospects. That's a role Joe said he's happy to fill.
"I'm always talking to the other guys, getting in their ears about Texas," Joe said. "For them it's where they want to go. But I think it's better for them to join our class.
"I tell them we're making history," Joe said. "Coach Mack Brown hasn't ever done this before with the offers going out this early. And I think we should have a pretty good class."
It's a class that Joe said should make waves once they reach campus.
"We can really do some things with these guys we're getting to Texas," Joe said. "With Demetrius, it just keeps on getting better. I'm really excited about our class right now, and I think we have a chance to go down there and do some damage."
