Initial Basketball Power Rankings, Part One

Looking at the top five Big 12 teams in's initial Big 12 Power Rankings.

1) Kansas (5-1)

KenPom Ranking: 12

Jayhawks in a sentence: Like with predicting Kansas to win the Big 12 title, this spot belongs to the Jayhawks until there's a reason to move them, or until Jeff Withey stops blocking shots at such an absurd rate — Texas is the only TEAM in the Big 12 with more blocks than the senior.

2) Kansas State (5-1)

KenPom Ranking: 21

Wildcats in a sentence: One of the Big 12's most experienced teams has the league's best scoring margin at 21.0 points per game despite not having a single scorer in the league's top 20.

3) Oklahoma State (5-0)

KenPom Ranking: 24

Cowboys in a sentence: Well-rounded freshman guard Marcus Smart might be the Big 12's top all-around player so far, placing in the league's top 13 in scoring (13th), rebounding (ninth), assists (third), steals (third) and blocks (ninth) per game.

4) Baylor (4-2)

KenPom Ranking: 25

Bears in a sentence: Pierre Jackson (20.3 points and 6.67 assists) and Isaiah Austin (14.2 points, 8.2 boards) have been as advertised, while Cory Jefferson (14.3 points, 9.0 rebounds 2.17 blocks, 70.6 field goal percentage) has been better than advertised.

5) Texas (6-2)

KenPom Ranking: 28

Longhorns in a sentence: Texas has the league's top defense to date, both in terms of field goal percentage defense (first nationally) and Adjusted Defensive Efficiency (third), but are struggling a bit to find good offense without in-limbo point guard Myck Kabongo.
