Texas senior defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat, senior cornerback Carrington Byndom and junior cornerback Quandre Diggs have all earned some measure of attention in their careers, with Jeffcoat and Byndom making the 2011 All-Big 12 First Team and Diggs earning freshman All-America honors two years ago.
Now, they'll try to make it the fifth-straight year that a Longhorn has won a CFPA award. Last year, Alex Okafor was named the CFPA Elite Defensive Lineman Trophy winner, and two years ago, Fozzy Whittaker was the CFPA Kickoff Returner Trophy Winner. In 2010, Sam Acho won the Defensive Lineman Trophy, while Earl Thomas took home the CFPA Defensive Back Trophy in 2009.
The CFPA is an interesting award given that the players are "selected exclusively based upon scientific rankings of the extent to which individuals increase the overall effectiveness of their teams."
All players are eligible for the awards at their specific position, while players aren't preemptively eliminated from consideration. More than 130 CFPA recipients have signed professional contracts, with 21 such players have been first-round NFL Draft selections. The full list of 2013 CFPA recipients will be announced on Jan. 8, 2014.
Texas's three players on the watch list mark the second-most players from any team in the nation.
Jeffcoat missed the final seven games of last year after rupturing his right pectoral muscle against Oklahoma, but he still had 11 tackles for loss and four sacks in six games, and he has posted at least one sack in 10 of his last 13 games, for a total of 12 sacks over those contests. This isn't his first watch list … Jeffcoat was named to the 2013 Lott Trophy watch list, and last year, he started the season on the Nagurski, Bednarik, Lombardi and, yes, the CFPA Defensive Lineman of the Year watch lists.
This also marks Byndom's second year on the CFPA watch list. He was a first-team All-Big 12 cornerback as a sophomore, making both the CFPA Defensive Back Trophy watch list and the Nagurski watch list before last season. Diggs was on a CFPA watch list last year as well, albeit at a different position: punt returner.
