Defensive tackle Chris Whaley and running back Johnathan Gray (Achilles) both sustained injuries against West Virginia that will require surgery and sideline them for the rest of the season, per Kenny Boyd, Texas head athletic trainer for football.
One of the team's biggest senior leaders, Whaley had 25 tackles on the year, including five tackles for loss and two sacks. Whaley had scored two defensive touchdowns in the three games heading into the West Virginia contest, returning an interception 31 yards for a score against Oklahoma, then a 40-yard fumble return against Kansas.
Gray was in the middle of a strong sophomore season that saw him rush for 780 yards on 159 carries (4.9 per carry), with four touchdowns on the year. He added another 15 catches for 61 yards.
