Big 12 Title Scenarios

Out of it? Hardly. Here are five scenarios that would result in the Longhorns winning at least a share of this year's Big 12 title.

Before we get started, here's a quick look at the Big 12's top four in the current standings.

Baylor — 6-0

Oklahoma State — 6-1

Texas — 6-1

Oklahoma — 5-2

1) A Clean Win

In this scenario, Oklahoma State beats Baylor today, then falls to Oklahoma in the Cowboys' finale. If Texas beats Texas Tech and Baylor, that leaves the Longhorns at 8-1 in the Big 12, with Baylor and Oklahoma State both sitting with two losses at 7-2*. Texas wins the league outright and goes to the Fiesta Bowl.

* Oklahoma would also potentially be 7-2 in this scenario

2) A Share

Oklahoma State wins out, beating Baylor along the way. Texas also wins out. That leaves both Oklahoma State and Texas at 8-1 with a share of the Big 12 title. Because Oklahoma State has a win over Texas this season, the Cowboys would possess the tie-breaker and would represent the Big 12 in the Fiesta Bowl.

3) A (Winning) Share

Baylor wins out before the finale. Texas defeats Texas Tech, then beats Baylor in the season's final game. That leaves both Texas and Baylor at 8-1, with the Longhorns holding the tiebreaker, via their head-to-head win over the Bears.

4) Three-Way Tie

Nearly the craziest of all these scenarios, this one has Oklahoma State beating Baylor, but falling to Oklahoma*, and Texas losing to Texas Tech, but defeating Baylor. That leaves all three teams at 7-2. Another version of this would be for Oklahoma to go undefeated, having Baylor, Texas and Oklahoma all at 7-2. In each of these, there's a team that is 2-0 against the other two teams. In the first scenario, Oklahoma State is 2-0, with wins over both Baylor and Texas. In the second, Texas would have wins over both Baylor and Oklahoma.

* In this scenario, Oklahoma loses to Kansas State. If the Sooners win that game, and the above happens, then you have …

5) Four-Way Tie

Katie bar the door if this happens. Baylor loses two of its last three. Texas loses to Texas Tech, but beats Baylor. Oklahoma State splits its last two, beating Baylor, but losing to Oklahoma. And Oklahoma wins out, leaving Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas ALL with 7-2 records in Big 12 play. In this nightmare, Oklahoma State and Texas would be 2-1 against the other opponents.
