Staff change coming at UT?

Many of you have asked me when I think any staff changes in the athletic department might start happening under Steve Patterson.

And I think the first step in the process is Patterson's hiring of Steve Hank from Arizona State as Texas' new "chief of revenue" for Texas athletics.

Hank is already on the payroll at Texas and multiple sources told me Hank will be the one to crunch the numbers (that Patterson may have already crunched) and start delivering the news to departments such as ticketing, marketing and external communications that things need to change.

It's been fascinating to talk to people who are in Patterson's path at Texas to hear just how different he operates than DeLoss Dodds, who always had a moment for student-athletes and athletic department employees to ask about their well-being.

Patterson has done very little glad-handing within the department.

"One source said athletic department employees, for the most part, are working in fear because Patterson has not tried to make any friends."

One source said athletic department employees, for the most part, are working in fear because Patterson has not tried to make any friends.

Several sources said Patterson is all about the numbers, the bottom line, revenue streams, selling tickets, marketing and customer service. He operates very much like a GM of a pro sports team, which is his history after working in the front offices of the Houston Rockets, Houston Texans and Portland Trail Blazers.

As AD at Arizona State, he set in motion a $200 million renovation of Sun Devil Stadium that is taking capacity from 73,000 down to between 60,000 and 65,000 while making room for more revenue-producing suites and club-level seating.

When Patterson took over as athletic director at ASU, there was no overhang at softball games, so there was no shade. Attendance was regularly more than 1,000 per game.

But Patterson immediately put up a solar shaded structure over the seats behind the backstop, which gave the softball field the appearance of a real stadium, while also providing shade for fans. And now, instead of 1,000 fans per game, softball attracts roughly 1,800 per game. More revenue from better customer service.

Patterson also became a bit of a folk hero at ASU, when Notre Dame attempted to cancel its trip to Arizona State scheduled for Oct. 25 of the 2014 football season. Patterson immediately went public to call out Notre Dame.

And the Irish backed down. The game is still on for this season in Tempe and will generate more revenue than most home games, because it's the Irish.

"At least in the little Catholic town I grew up in -- Beaver Dam, Wisconsin -- the good nuns wouldn't have thought that was a very appropriate way to honor your word," Patterson told Phoenix radio station XTRA Sports 910 AM at the time.

"Our position is 'Hey, we've got a contract,' and we expect Notre Dame to live up to it," Patterson said.

Three areas Patterson has already appeared to zero in on at Texas is ticketing, marketing and customer service. Sources tell me Patterson thinks UT can do a much better job of selling tickets to all sporting events and may need some new ideas in marketing and customer service to do it.

"At Arizona State, Patterson made the entire athletic department go through intense, customer service training by Disney officials."

At Arizona State, Patterson made the entire athletic department go through intense, customer service training by Disney officials. Patterson has hinted at that idea at Texas.

Patterson has talked openly about huge fund-raising initiatives such as $350 million needed to endow all of Texas' athletic scholarships and $200 million for renovations to DKR (which could include removing some capacity to make room for more revenue-producing suites and luxury seating).

The most pressing initiative is $15 million for a new tennis facility to replace Penick-Allison, which is being demolished June 1 to make room for UT's new medical school.

Initially, DeLoss Dodds indicated that money would come out of the UT athletic department budget. But Patterson has indicated that money needs to be raised. If Texas doesn't break ground on the facility by July, it won't be ready for the 2015-16 school year, it's target date to open.

Is Patterson just trying to jumpstart the Longhorn Foundation to see if donors are ready to give, knowing he can dip into the UT budget to pay for the facility?

And just how effective Will Patterson be as a fund-raiser after handling the football coaching search largely on his own, ignoring some candidates put forth by wealthy boosters, including Red McCombs, who had pushed for Jon Gruden.

UT officials say privately Patterson hasn't yet begun any orchestrated fund-raising campaigns. The question is if donors will respond once he does begin those campaigns? (Brown)

When Joe Wickline was hired as offensive coordinator at Texas, he had a contract as the offensive line coach at Oklahoma State that called for a $600,000 buyout if Wickline left for any job less than that of an offensive coordinator with play-calling duties.

Even though Texas coach Charlie Strong has said publicly that final say on play-calling will rest with Shawn Watson, UT officials say Wickline will be involved in play-calling enough – helping set the script for the first 15 plays of a game or deciding which running plays should be called during a game – that OSU will have no grounds to demand the buyout. Jeffcoat thinks he's a first-rounder

Jackson Jeffcoat did everything he could to prove, in his mind, that he's worthy of a first round pick in tomorrow's NFL Draft. But that's not the feedback he's gotten from NFL teams.

"I am hearing second and third [rounds]," said Jeffcoat, who became the fifth defensive end consensus All-American in school history and the second Longhorn to win the Ted Hendricks Award given annually to the nation's top defensive end.

It's not exactly what Jeffcoat wants to hear but such is life of an NFL Draft hopeful. All he can do is use those saying there are better defensive ends in the draft as fuel for his workouts, which have taken place at Colorado University where his father, Jim Jeffcoat, is the defensive line coach.

"Honestly I feel like I played like a first-rounder this year…"

"Honestly I feel like I played like a first-rounder this year but it doesn't always happen like that," he said. "Whatever team gets me is going to get a guy that plays his butt off and I will be excited to play for that organization.

"It definitely fuels me whenever they project someone over you and you had a better year than them. But I'm not bitter or mad about it. All that being bitter does is bring negative energy on me. It doesn't affect anybody else. I just keep my head down, grind, and keep working, and eventually it will show. I was a top recruit out of high school. I ended my season real well out of college and I have showed that I can play at a high level in the NFL as well." [Wilkerson]

Coaches Hitting the Road

While head coach Charlie Strong is conducting his first Big 12 meetings the rest of the staff is hot on the recruiting trail.

One position that is at a premium is the defensive backfield where Strong, DC Vance Bedford and DB coach Chris Vaughn are in search of the next great corners and safeties.

Texas has two safeties currently committed in Keivon Ramsey from Converse (TX) Judson and DeShon Elliott from Rockwall (TX) Rockwall-Heath. Texas fans don't need to worry about taking another safety in this class unless something changes with either of these two players. Keep an eye on Ramsey as a few schools, including LSU are recruiting him heavily.

The corner position is where the most action is at this time. Kendall Sheffield, Kris Boyd, Roney Elam, Holton Hill and P.J. Mbanasor are all on Texas' radar.

"Track is going to be just as important, if not more for Kendall, and look for the Texas track coach to be heavily involved during his unofficial visit this weekend."

Sheffield is the No 2 ranked corner in the country. He is from Missouri City (TX) Marshall high school and has offers from just about every major program in the country. Keep an eye on Texas A&M with the Sheffield family. Track is going to be just as important, if not more for Kendall, and look for the Texas track coach to be heavily involved during his unofficial visit this weekend.

Boyd is a four star player, the No 6 ranked corner from Gilmer (TX) high school. Boyd, like Sheffield, has offers from all the top tier teams and has the Longhorns in the mix. Mbanasor is also giving Texas a long look as is Reserve (LA) East Saint John standout Xavier Lewis. Vaughn has done an outstanding job in the state of Louisiana seeing such players as Malik Antoine, Tre Jackson, Nicholas Brossette and Bladrick Veal.

The state of Texas will always be where the coaches look first but get used to the fact that the state of Louisiana will be a regular stop for Vaughn.

Two players I feel Texas might have the best shot at are Hill and Elam. Hill, a 6-foot-2, 175-pounder from Houston (TX) Lamar, has Texas near the top of the list in my opinion and they are the team to beat. The coaching staff absolutely loves Hill and his ability to go play the ball in the air. He has great size, hips and natural ability to turn and run with wide receivers. With as many defensive backs as they would like to land in 2015, Hill is a must get.

Elam is listed as a safety at 6-foot-3, 170-pounds but has corner like instincts. He is from Newton (TX) with offers from everyone. Elam played quarterback and defensive back and shows a tremendous amount of athleticism. He is a four-star player and ranked as the No 21 ranked safety in the class of 2015. He is being looked at to play corner with the Longhorns. Keep an eye on Hill & Elam. These are but a handful of defensive backs the coaching staff is looking at.

Coach Shawn Watson has been a busy man as well visiting signal callers Kai Locksley and checking in on 2016 standout quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Locksley is 6-foot-4, 180-pounds from Baltimore (MD) Gilman School. Haskins is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound quarterback from Potomac (MD) The Bullis School.

Zach Gentry is a 6-foot-6, 230-pound quarterback that can really run for a guy his size. He was in camp with Watson and Strong at Louisville so they are very familiar with each other. Gentry and his father have already visited Austin and left with a great sense of the program and surrounding area. Gentry is from Albuquerque (NM) Eldorado high school and is a legit option for coach Watson.

Other names you will hear are Chason Virgil and Kyler Murray. I would not worry about either being Longhorns with the way things stand today. One player to keep an eye on, however, is Quinten Dormady (Boerne, Texas), who stands 6-foot-4 and 210-pounds, and North Carolina commitment Nathan Elliott (Celina, Texas). Watson will watch Dormady throw soon and we will see what happens but he is a much better player than people give him credit for.

Offensive line coach Joe Wickline went to see Notre Dame verbal commitment Jerry Tiller last Friday and has made some in-roads with the Tillery family. Tillery is 6-foot-6, 315-pounds from Shreveport (LA) Evangel Christian Academy. Keep an eye on Texas with the Tiller family and lets see if they get to Austin over the summer.

Texas was scheduled to visit Tallahassee (Fla.) today to check on wide receiver John Burt but Airplane equipment failure has postponed that trip for now.

One of the most impressive players Texas visited is actually in the class of 2016. Kendell Jones is a freak of nature at 6-foot 4, 315-pounds. No 16-year-old kid should look the way this kid does. He looks like an NFL DL right now with two years of high school left. Jones would get my vote right now for the overall top player in the state of Texas for the class of 2016. [Higdon]

Big visitors this weekend

It's taken some time but five-star defensive back Kendall Sheffield (Missouri City, Texas/Marshall) will finally visit Texas for his first on-campus visit with Charlie Strong as the head coach.

Sheffield, the No. 2 cornerback in the country, is one of the top players on Texas' board regardless of position. But he represents far more than that in the grand scheme for UT. He represents the chance for the Longhorns to make amends for missing out on the elite DBs in the state from 2014 like Tony Brown (Alabama), Jamal Adams (LSU), and Arrion Springs (Oregon).

He'll also be in town competing in three events at the UIL State Track and Field meet (4x100 meter relay, 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles).

The talented back will visit Texas on Saturday and you can expect him to get the full red carpet treatment.

In an interview with HornsDigest in March, which you can read here, Sheffield's father hinted that his son would likely be staying in Texas for college.

"He needs to visit a couple of schools. Before he makes any decision he needs to visit more schools," Cecil Sheffield said. "But it's the Texas schools, I'm just going to put it that way."

Asked if his son is as interested in Texas as Longhorns fans hope he is, Cecil answered, "Yes he is, trust me."

Sheffield won't be the only big name to visit Texas this weekend. Four-star 2016 safety Brandon Jones (Nacogdoches, Texas) will also visit when he gets to Austin to compete in the track meet.

Jones, who is nearing 20 offers, is considered a Texas A&M lean at this point. Joe Wickline visited he and his teammate, 2015 DB Jaylon Lane, on Tuesday. [Wilkerson]

LSU commitment intrigued by Horns

Even from afar, the path for four-star running back Nicholas Brossette (Baton Rouge, La./University Lab) seems to be headed straight for LSU.

The No. 11 RB in the country goes to school in the shadows of Death Valley and surpassed Tigers running back Kenny Hilliard for the most career touchdowns in state history (120) last season.

But the Longhorns are doing everything they can to curve that path toward Austin, and they're letting Brossette know it.

If those letters don't tell the story of how much Texas wants Brossette, despite already having three RB commitments in 2015, then let him tell you.

"I know that I am really high on their list and everything," he said. "They are recruiting me really hard. I kind of like it. I'm just sitting back and enjoying right now."

"Fortunately for Texas, it has Chris Vaughn working on Brossette."

Fortunately for Texas, it has Chris Vaughn working on Brossette. Vaughn has received nothing but praise from recruits since he took Texas' job as defensive backs coach. Brossette will tell you no different.

"I have a good relationship with him," he said. "He's a cool guy and I talk to him a lot."

In addition to LSU and Texas, Brossette also has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Miami, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UCLA, and Vanderbilt.

He remains steadfast in his commitment to the Tigers – in big part to relationship he has with Les Miles – but insists Texas has a chance.

"My options are open," he said. "Anything can happen I'll just leave it at that." [Wilkerson].

Longhorn lineman on the move?

Nothing is set in stone right now but sources close to the situation tell HornsDigest that they wouldn't be surprised to see one particular reserve offensive lineman transfer this summer.

This particular OL is said to be out of shape and falling out of favor with offensive line coach Joe Wickline.

There are a lot of questions surrounding this line, which only brings back one starter in Dominic Espinosa. But there's plenty of talent to supplement those other loses.

Texas seems to be set at center (Espinosa) and left tackle (Sedrick Flowers) but all other spots are still open. That includes left tackle Desmond Harrison, who didn't perform that well in the Orange-White game and came nowhere close to living up to expectations placed upon him from his JUCO days.

Once Kent Perkins returns this fall expect him to slide inside to right guard where he'll replace Taylor Doyle. [Wilkerson]

Video with Whitfield and Dilfer

Annabel Stephan caught up with quarterback guru George Whitfield at the Dallas Elite 11 for his thoughts on Jerrod Heard, whom he's worked extremely closely with, as well as Tyrone Swoopes:

She also spoke with Trent Dilfer about Swoopes:

Annabel caught up with massive 2016 defensive tackle Kendell Jones (Killeen, Texas/Shoemaker), who is easily the biggest recruit out of that school since former Longhorn DT Roy Miller.

Jones wants to visit Texas again but, but, be wary of a certain SEC school for this New Orleans native.

Finals week just what Texas baseball needs?

This is how bad/strange things have gotten for Augie Garrido's baseball team, which has lost 7 of its last 11, falling from potential Super Regional host to perhaps a regional road team:

Pitcher Dillon Peters missed his Saturday start vs. West Virginia with a salivary duct stone.

A what?

According to WebMD.com, a salivary gland stone - also called salivary duct stone - is a calcified structure that may form inside a salivary gland or duct. It is painful, causes swelling and can block the flow of saliva.

"I can hear Harry Doyle (Bob Uecker) in Major League, looking over at Monty, his colorman, and saying, "This one's really hard to swallow."

I can hear Harry Doyle (Bob Uecker) in Major League, looking over at Monty, his colorman, and saying, "This one's really hard to swallow."

With Peters missing from the lineup, Texas' bullpen was called on for eight innings in the first two games of the West Virginia series.

That bullpen gave out in Sunday's deciding game against WVU, when starter Lukas Schiraldi didn't have command of his fastball and gave up 5 runs (3 earned) in just 2 innings of work in a 12-6 loss.

It probably seems like a lifetime ago since the Longhorns were on a 14-2 tear, including Big 12 series victories over Oklahoma and Baylor to reach 30-8.

The Longhorns have lost consecutive Big 12 series to TCU, Oklahoma State and WVU, falling to 34-15. UT is 4-4 in B12 series, 5-7 at home and 6-3 on the road with one final B12 series left at Kansas State (May 16-18).

UT is now 4-17 in its last 21 Big 12 series spanning the last three seasons.

Who would have thought a week-long break from games to take finals - FINALS! - could be what the Longhorns need to get a turnaround season back on course.

But with five wins against Top 25 teams (Rice, Houston, Texas Tech (2) and Oklahoma State), Texas doesn't appear to be in jeopardy of missing the postseason. At least at this point.

Peters is day-to-day but should be back for the Kansas State series next week.

Clean-up hitter Tres (pronounced Tress) Berrera, is going through the peaks and valleys of a freshman season. Berrera was batting .400 for most of a 20-game stretch from March 11 through April 17, which included that 14-2 run.

But since the series sweep by red-hot TCU, Berrera is just 3 of 25 at the plate (.120) over the last 11 games.

Believe it or not, finals week - gulp - may be what Peters needs to get rid of the salivary duct stone in his mouth and what Berrera and Texas' pitching needs to get back on track.

At least that's what Augie Garrido is hoping. [Brown]

A few thoughts on Vahe and K. Jones

On Euless Trinity offensive lineman Patrick Vahe, I really do believe him when he says he's "fully solid" to Texas. Joe Wickline has done a fantastic job of keeping in contact with him and I feel like that has played a big role in Vahe's status. I also think he's exactly the type of player that Texas' offensive line needs to be recruiting: aside from his obvious talent, he's vocal, enthusiastic, and doesn't take off any reps. [Stephan]

I wouldn't expect any sort of commitment to come soon for Killeen Shoemaker four-star 2016 defensive lineman Kendell Jones, but I would say that Texas still has as good a chance as any to eventually land him. The SEC has piqued Jones' interest, but he told me he loved his visit to Texas earlier this year and it was the first program he said he wants to camp at this summer. Brian Jean-Mary went out to see him last Friday, and he's one that the staff will definitely need to continue to recruit, with so many other programs coming in.[Stephan]

Keep an eye on this QB

Ross Trail may be a new name on the radar screen of Texas Longhorns fans, but it is in no way a new name to Charlie Strong or Shawn Watson. Trail was committed to Louisville, specifically hand picked by Watson to be the guy in the 2015 class and he fits in well with what they like to do offensively.

Texas went by to see him and that may be the first time many have paid attention to his name in Austin, but the lines of communication between the two parties has been open from day one that new staff has arrived on the 40 acres and Trail has been kept in the loop step by step with exactly the quarterback recruiting situation is at UT, saying to me he may be worth watching somewhat closer.

Trail is rated as a three-star prospect, and was one of the top performers at the Dallas Elite 11 regional stop and seems to be very well coached at the position. [Greg Powers]

Patterson has done very little glad-handing within the department.

\"One source said athletic department employees, for the most part, are working in fear because Patterson has not tried to make any friends.\"

\"At least in the little Catholic town I grew up in -- Beaver Dam, Wisconsin -- the good nuns wouldn't have thought that was a very appropriate way to honor your word,\" Patterson told Phoenix radio station XTRA Sports 910 AM at the time.

\"Our position is 'Hey, we've got a contract,' and we expect Notre Dame to live up to it,\" Patterson said.

Three areas Patterson has already appeared to zero in on at Texas is ticketing, marketing and customer service. Sources tell me Patterson thinks UT can do a much better job of selling tickets to all sporting events and may need some new ideas in marketing and customer service to do it.

\"At Arizona State, Patterson made the entire athletic department go through intense, customer service training by Disney officials.\"

Jackson Jeffcoat did everything he could to prove, in his mind, that he's worthy of a first round pick in tomorrow's NFL Draft. But that's not the feedback he's gotten from NFL teams.

\"I am hearing second and third [rounds],\" said Jeffcoat, who became the fifth defensive end consensus All-American in school history and the second Longhorn to win the Ted Hendricks Award given annually to the nation's top defensive end.

\"Honestly I feel like I played like a first-rounder this year…\"

\"Honestly I feel like I played like a first-rounder this year but it doesn't always happen like that,\" he said. \"Whatever team gets me is going to get a guy that plays his butt off and I will be excited to play for that organization.

\"It definitely fuels me whenever they project someone over you and you had a better year than them. But I'm not bitter or mad about it. All that being bitter does is bring negative energy on me. It doesn't affect anybody else. I just keep my head down, grind, and keep working, and eventually it will show. I was a top recruit out of high school. I ended my season real well out of college and I have showed that I can play at a high level in the NFL as well.\" [Wilkerson]

\"Track is going to be just as important, if not more for Kendall, and look for the Texas track coach to be heavily involved during his unofficial visit this weekend.\"

[Higdon]

\"He needs to visit a couple of schools. Before he makes any decision he needs to visit more schools,\" Cecil Sheffield said. \"But it's the Texas schools, I'm just going to put it that way.\"

Asked if his son is as interested in Texas as Longhorns fans hope he is, Cecil answered, \"Yes he is, trust me.\"

[Wilkerson]

The University of Texas showing me a lot of love!! ?????????? #Blessed pic.twitter.com/qzfhYgD8bD

— Nicholas Brossette (@NBrossette) April 28, 2014

If those letters don't tell the story of how much Texas wants Brossette, despite already having three RB commitments in 2015, then let him tell you.

\"I know that I am really high on their list and everything,\" he said. \"They are recruiting me really hard. I kind of like it. I'm just sitting back and enjoying right now.\"

\"Fortunately for Texas, it has Chris Vaughn working on Brossette.\"

Fortunately for Texas, it has Chris Vaughn working on Brossette. Vaughn has received nothing but praise from recruits since he took Texas' job as defensive backs coach. Brossette will tell you no different.

\"I have a good relationship with him,\" he said. \"He's a cool guy and I talk to him a lot.\"

\"My options are open,\" he said. \"Anything can happen I'll just leave it at that.\" [Wilkerson].

[Wilkerson]

\"I can hear Harry Doyle (Bob Uecker) in Major League, looking over at Monty, his colorman, and saying, \"This one's really hard to swallow.\"

I can hear Harry Doyle (Bob Uecker) in Major League, looking over at Monty, his colorman, and saying, \"This one's really hard to swallow.\"

[Brown]

On Euless Trinity offensive lineman Patrick Vahe, I really do believe him when he says he's \"fully solid\" to Texas.
