Source: Wittek recruitment over

Texas is no longer recruiting USC quarterback Max Wittek, a source close to the situation told HornsDigest.com Wednesday night.

"There is no chance Wittek will end up at Texas, the source said."

There is no chance Wittek will end up at Texas, the source said, ending what was once an intense recruitment of an insurance policy for Texas at the quarterback position.

Wittek, a 53 percent passer with 3 TD passes and 6 INTs in limited action with the Trojans, including two starts, made three trips to Austin, including the Texas spring game on April 19.

But there were developments late the recruiting process that caused Texas to back off of Wittek, who took more than 20 hours this semester to graduate from USC and transfer somewhere with two years of eligibility, the source said.

"Texas had been window-shopping for other quarterbacks while Wittek was attempting to finish his degree."

Texas had been window-shopping for other quarterbacks while Wittek was attempting to finish his degree.

Sources said that bothered Wittek, who also took a visit to Hawaii.

Wittek, Wittek's father and QB coach all did not return calls or texts from HornsDigest.com on Wednesday.

But Wittek told Fox Sports he was unaware his situation with Texas had changed and that he planned to announce a transfer destination at the end of the month.

The end of the recruitment of Wittek leaves Texas right where it is now: hoping junior QB David Ash can recover from foot surgery in April and then show he can take a hit during the season after a head injury caused him to miss 10 games last year.

If Ash is not the answer, Texas would turn to still-developing sophomore Tyrone Swoopes or incoming freshman Jerrod Heard.

Coaches have indicated privately they'd like to avoid rushing Heard into action. With either Swoopes or Heard at QB, there would likely be growing pains for Texas, which faces BYU, UCLA, Baylor and Oklahoma in the first six games of the 2014 season.

The source said Texas would be looking for other transfer options at QB. But those options are limited.

More on Gentry

From what I've heard four-star quarterback Zach Gentry (Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado) was sold on the Longhorns when he and his family visited Texas' campus in early April.

That comes as a bit of a surprise because of the fondness he'd felt for the other UT, Tennessee. He and his father visited Knoxville in late March where he was shown the red carpet treatment, and told our InsideTennessee.com that the Vols were "at the top."

That was in large part to Tennessee's staff staying in constant contact with him, at least "once a week," and having its coaching staff stop by his school on multiple occasions.

However, he started envisioning a different shade of orange after he visited Texas with his father and rekindled those relationships he'd built with Charlie Strong and Shawn Watson at Louisville. Read more about that here.

What would have been interesting, and potentially fatal to Texas' chances of landing him, would have been if Nick Saban had followed through with his planned conversation with Gentry on Monday.

There's a reason Saban has won the national titles he has because he can sell recruits on a vision as well as anyone. There's no telling what would have transpired had he and Gentry spoke over the phone on Monday.

"Alabama was all in on Gentry having sent offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin to see him last week."

Alabama was all in on Gentry having sent offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin to see him last week. It was those relationships with Texas' coaching staff, and the fact that they took a chance on him at Louisville by being the first major program to offer him, that made him end his commitment.

He'll likely be back in town when Texas hosts an Elite Quarterback Academy from June 9-11. [Wilkerson]

West Coast Love

There were plenty of Longhorns recruits excited to see four-star quarterback Zach Gentry commit to Texas on Monday. But it would be hard to find one less surprised than 2016 commitment Collin Johnson.

The four-star receiver from San Jose (Calif.) Valley Christian, whose brother, Kirk Johnson, is a 2015 UT commitment, knew about Gentry's decision earlier than just about anyone.

"I knew he was going to commit about three weeks before he did."

"He actually told me he was going to commit before he did," Johnson said of Gentry. "That just really goes to show that he trusts me. I knew he was going to commit about three weeks before he did."

The fact that Gentry would trust Johnson with that sort of information really meant a lot to Texas' lone commitment in 2016.

"Even Coach [Charlie] Strong tweeted that it was huge after Zach committed," he said. "Zach was the main guy because quarterbacks are the heart of the offense. I can't wait to get started down there. We were talking about how cool it would be when we were down there. There's definitely no other guy that comes to mind immediately than him [that I wanted to commit to Texas.]"

That's because, like Johnson said, quarterbacks are the heart of the offense. But also because the two are from the same region of the country and there's pride in that.

Texas hasn't always been big on recruiting the West Coast, but Strong and his staff have shown that they're willing to venture out to help bring Texas back to where it was in 2009.

UT has commitments from West Coast recruits in the Johnson's and Gentry, and has offers out to 2015 wide receiver Christian Kirk (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro), offensive tackle Keenan Walker (Scottsdale, AZ/Chaparral), defensive end Keisean Lucier-South (Orange, Calif./Lutheran), defensive tackle Khalil McKenzie (Concord, Calif./De La Salle), defensive end Takkarist McKinley (Contra Costa CC).

Johnson hopes the late trend of West Coast commitments continues.

"Texas is known for recruiting Texas but we've definitely got some talent out here on the West Coast," he said. "California, especially, I think we have some good athletes out here. But all over the nation I think [Strong] is doing a good job of letting people know about his recruiting style and how he likes guys with strong character. He's definitely a good recruiter. Looking out here is a smart move for him."

The Johnson's grew up loving Texas from Day 1 since their father, Johnnie Johnson, played at UT. So they know more about the program than most, and are doing their best to spread the word to recruits around them.

"Every time I get the chance I am telling people what Texas has to offer," he said. "Even Zach, we were down there the same day on our unofficial visit. I really got to know him and his family. We built a real strong relationship. We talk to each other all the time. I am definitely proactive about talking to a lot of people."

Other are returning the favor to Johnson and talking up their programs to the 6-foot-4, 195-pound WR. But he's staying firm with his commitment.

"Some schools I feel just stopped recruiting us, especially my brother because he's going to be a senior and they figure he is deadest on going there," he said. "But me, they think they can sway me. But I'm really comfortable with my decision. Actually Michigan was there [Thursday] and offered me. That's great but I am really comfortable with my decision with Texas."

Nebraska, Cal, UCLA, Stanford, Penn State, Alabama and Notre Dame are also recruiting him. [Wilkerson]

This and That:

The Texas Longhorns and head coach Charlie Strong are sitting with 10 verbal commitments for the class of 2015. Coach Strong has seven offensive and three defensive players with the addition of four star quarterback Zach Gentry earlier this week.

Joining Gentry are running backs Jordan Stevenson, Kirk Johnson and Tristian Houston. Texas is looking to land five offensive linemen for this class and currently has tackles Toby Weathersby and Ronnie Major with the addition of guard Patrick Vahe. Vahe could slide to center as well.

Strong has three verbal commitments from the defensive side of the ball with defensive end Charles Omenihu and two from the safety position with DeShon Elliott and Keivon Ramsey.

Many teams across the nation are dealing in cold hard numbers regarding this year's recruiting class. One player to keep an eye on as it relates to Texas is kicker Andrew Galitz. If Texas decided to take a kicker he could be the one.

Into the Future:

Defensive back Junior Dorbah from Conrad high school class of 2017 has caught the eye of the coaching staff.

Turning To Texas?

Both Jerry Tillery and Deionte Thompson ended the recruiting process early announcing for Notre Dame and Alabama respectfully. Tillery and Thompson have both shown interest in the situation at Texas. While it is never smart to predict a committed player ends up elsewhere it will be fun to watch as things progress with each of these two players. The key with both will be how many and when will they visit Austin.

Young Guns:

Texas has shown more than a little interest in a few under class players. All Texas fans should be familiar with the following names for next year's class. Manvel Safety standout Deontay Anderson recently visited Texas with his family and to say they were impressed would be an understatement.

Other 2016 players to keep an eye on would be wide receivers Devin Duvernay and Reggie Hemphill and corner back Jared Mayden. Ed Oliver from Houston Westfield is a big time target for the Texas staff, but Oliver is also a heavy LSU lean.

Top Ten:

Texas is in great shape with more than a few players at this time. The way I see it Texas has the best shot at landing these 10 players as things stand today:

Wide receivers John Burt, Ryan Newsome and Kemah Siverand

Offensive tackle Madison Akamnonu

Defensive end Takkarist McKinley

Defensive tackle Kingsley Keke

Defensive Backs Holton Hill, Roney Elam, Kendall Sheffield and Kris Boyd [Higdon]

JUCO DT intrigued by UT

Interest is picking up between the Longhorns and JUCO defensive tackle Motekiai Maile (Tyler, Texas/Tyler Junior College).

Texas defensive line coach Chris Rumph actually stopped by to see the 6-foot-4, 300-pounder on Tuesday, when Maile got a good feel for what exactly the Longhorns were all about.

"We talked a lot. We talked about what he wanted me to play," he said." He showed me some of UT's defense and what he would want me in and stuff. He just said he wanted me to come in and play three-technique, nose guard or defensive end."

"Maile doesn't have an offer yet but he said Rumph told him one would likely come when he visits Texas on June 6."

Maile doesn't have an offer yet but he said Rumph told him one would likely come when he visits Texas on June 6.

"He's pretty tough but he's a cool guy," Maile said. "He's got a great personality. He's funny. I could play for someone like him."

Maile spent his final two years at Pittsburgh (Calif.) High School but is originally from Euless, Texas, where he went to school at powerhouse Euless Trinity. So he knows plenty about the Longhorns program.

"Just being from Texas, and them being Texas, everyone knows Texas," he said. "They have a great program. I really didn't grow up with a dream school. I'm just grateful for a school to give me the opportunity."

That list of opportunities keeps growing as he has picked up offers from North Texas, TCU, SMU, Arizona State, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech. USC has also expressed interest.

Maile helped TJC to a nine-win season in 2013, when he teamed with Mississippi State defensive end signee Will Coleman and TCU safety signee Kenny Iloka to give the Apaches a tough defense. Maile recorded 30 tackles, 4 1/2 sacks, and one fumble recovery.

"All the coaches tell me I'm an athletic defensive tackle," he said. "I can pass rush and stop the run. I can run."

Maile said he'd likely commit before two-a-days this season. He'll enroll somewhere in the spring of 2015.

"Really there is no school that is standing out," he said. "I'm going to make my pick and make it the best pick I can. Hopefully it's not a bad pick." [Wilkerson]

Week in tweets

Longhorns kicker Anthony Fera signed with the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday.

Texas head coach Charlie Strong tweeted this just after Zach Gentry announced his commitment via Twitter:

Class of 2016 safety Brandon Jones (Nacogdoches, Texas) visited Texas while in Austin for the state track meet on Saturday.

Four-star defensive tackle Sterling Johnson (Clayton, NC/Cleveland), who holds a Longhorns offer, announced his commitment to Clemson on Tuesday.

Four-star DB Kris Boyd (Gilmer, Texas) picked up several big offers this week, including one Texas' rivals in College Station.

He also got one from a long-standing SEC power.

Four-star DB P.J. Mbanasor (Pflugerville, Texas/Hendrickson) has an idea when he'd like to narrow things down.

Westfield feedback

Stopped by Westfield on Monday to check in and UT OC Joe Wickline was on hand checking out Longhorn commit offensive lineman Toby Weathersby, along with defensive tackle target from the 2016 class in Ed Oliver. As for Weathersby, he looked solid playing the tackle position. Great upper body strength and showed good feet in pass pro. On the run blocking, when in team scrimmage, he was able to get to the second level.

With Oliver, his speed off the ball is shocking. He is so tough to block that it's surprising that more schools have not gotten in on him yet. Speaking on defense, current Longhorn and Westfield alumnus Tank Jackson was at practice checking out his former teammates.

Four-star defensive tackle Sterling Johnson (Clayton, NC/Cleveland), who holds a Longhorns offer, announced his commitment to Clemson on Tuesday.

I would to thank all the schools who have offered but, It's official, I am verbally committed to Clemson university ! #Tigers????

— Sterling Johnson (@HighlightReal90) May 13, 2014

Four-star DB Kris Boyd (Gilmer, Texas) picked up several big offers this week, including one Texas' rivals in College Station.

Biggest offer of all! I'm taking things in and would like to not be asked about when my choice will be made but A&M has offerd!???? #gigem

He also got one from a long-standing SEC power.

Four-star DB P.J. Mbanasor (Pflugerville, Texas/Hendrickson) has an idea when he'd like to narrow things down.

Thankful that during this spring period coaches have come by. Im narrowing things down continuously & will be announcing my top on May 29th

John Garcia of BamaMag.com wrote a story about 2015 offensive lineman Josh Williams recently, and the 6-foot-4, 300-pounder had some intriguing stuff to say about the Longhorns.

\"I've always wanted to go to Texas. I'm a little bit of a country boy so I always thought of Texas.\"
