After what seemed like a long recruiting process that included not one, but two commitments, Houston (Tex.) Cy Falls defensive tackle Du'Vonta Lampkin is not the only one excited that the process is over.
When he made his choice at a friend’s home this past Monday, several family members were present as well. One was glad on many fronts.
“I’m just glad he’s going to Texas right now. I don’t really have much more to say than that,” Ed Lampkin, Du'Vonta’s father said Monday afternoon. “This was a very stressful process and I’m glad it’s over with.”
Sure along the way that father Ed dealt with quite a bit along with his 6-foot-4, 290-pound son, who is a four-star defensive tackle and the No. 23-ranked player at that position.
Early in the process, Lampkin called for the Longhorns’ Red River rival in Oklahoma (which was a still a finalist in the end), but backed away from that commitment a few months back. LSU was the other program in the running as well.
The star defender spoke on the family aspect of the decision in an interview conducted just after the announcement.
“It just basically it came down to staying closer to home. I know plenty of people there,” Lampkin said of family in the Central Texas area. “This (decision) is a huge weight off of my shoulders. I’m close to all of my family.”
Father, Ed, echoed similar thoughts.
“We get to go see him every weekend. All of the family lives here in Texas,” Ed said . “A lot of them stay around the Austin area. Really man, I’m just happy.”
That feeling seemed to be the common denominator amongst the friends and the Lampkin family present.
