C. Warren lists top 6

Four-star running back Chris Warren (Rockwall, Texas) has been fairly tip-lipped about his recruitment over the summer. But he made quite a splash on Saturday with the release of his top 6.

Warren, the No. 11 RB and No. 93 player in the country, is one of Texas’ top remaining targets despite the Longhorns having commitments from three backs already.

Texas the favorite for Moore?

Three-star center Tyler Moore (Galena Park, Texas/North Shore) released his top five on Sunday night. As expected, Texas made the cut.

There really weren’t any surprises here, including the fact that Oklahoma didn’t make the cut.

HornsDigest learned on Friday that the Sooners were going a different direction.

The school that is really making a hard push for Moore right now is Texas Tech.

Moore was scheduled to visit Tech on Thursday but he was unable to travel to Lubbock because he couldn’t miss practice since the Mustangs had a scrimmage Friday morning.

He was told a few weeks ago that if he came out for a visit he wouldn’t leave without an offer.

Texas, to me, has to be the clubhouse leader. Moore has told me that UT was a dream school of his growing up and his other dream school – Oklahoma – is out of the picture.

He recently told our Ahmard Vital that Texas, Colorado and Oregon State were standing out to him.

A name to know at TE

Options appear to be limited should Texas miss out on the Will Gragg sweepstakes.

But here’s a name to at least put in your back pocket should the four-star decide to go elsewhere: Hunter Thedford (Comanche, Texas).

Thedford is an incredibly intriguing prospect and one that could see his stock soar this season.

He transferred to tiny Comanche, Texas from even tinier Gustine, Texas, where he starred as a slot receiver and nose guard in six-man football.

“I came from a six-man school so we didn’t really have a tight end position,” he said. “We had a receiver position so I was always a slot receiver. Then on defense I was always a nose guard. So I have only been working at this for one year and did the best that I could.”

Thedford (6-foot-6, 209 pounds) didn’t get many opportunities to catch at Comanche. He caught both passes that came his way but was largely used as an offensive lineman.

“Last year I didn’t even get to play that much tight end,” he said. “They put me on the line more as a tackle because I didn’t really know the plays and know what to do. This year I know the plays and I know what I’m doing. So that should be a lot easier.”

Thedford’s size is reason enough to cast looks his way but he’s starting to back that up with an improving skillset.

He already has a UTEP offer and opened some eyes at Texas’ “Under the Lights” camp.

“I honestly thought I did really well,” Thedford said. “I caught pretty much everything. That was a good thing and shows a lot about you when all of the coaches are watching you and you can still catch and still do what they want from you. That was a big deal.

“They said I was one of the better tight ends and were really impressed with my footwork, especially for me being so tall. They were impressed with how I could move.”

Being able to show colleges that he can block has been Thedford’s biggest task this summer, and will continue to be this fall.

“That’s what all the camp invites have been for,” he said. “Schools really didn’t get to see me catch last year. I only caught two passes. I was 2-for-2. They wanted to see more of the blocking at the camps. They said they like my hands but they didn’t know how I could block, and that’s what they want as a tight end from most of those schools.”

Thedford said that Texas was going to stay in touch and evaluate him further this season.

“They said they were going to send a lot of their scouts to watch me block,” he said. “That’s their main concern. They know I can catch. They just want to see me block more.”

All eyes on Cleveland

The Longhorns have extended offers to four receivers in 2016 and have picked up a commitment from one in Collin Johnson. But they are working toward identifying other potential offers.

One of those players is four-star Tyrie Cleveland (Houston/Westfield), a teammate of 2015 UT offensive line commitment Toby Weathersby.

Cleveland, the No. 34 WR and No. 167 player in 2016, had a breakout sophomore campaign for the Mustangs in which he caught 21 passes for 392 yards and three touchdowns.

That season combined with solid performances at camps this summer have earned him offers from the likes of Kentucky, Louisville, TCU, and Texas A&M.

Cleveland knows he’ll just have to continue to put up numbers in order for more offers to come.

“I just have to go out there and have fun, be aggressive and make plays,” he said. “I think it’s my work ethic and the heart I have for the sport I love have helped me get these offers. I never give up and have a positive attitude.”

Cleveland mentioned Baylor, Texas Tech and LSU as three offers he would like to eventually receive.

Though he didn’t name Texas, the Longhorns are among those offers he wishes for. He got a chance to experience what life is like as a Longhorn during UT’s “Under the Lights” camp.

“Texas is a great campus,” he said. “The coaches are 100 percent with you. It’s nice to be around the coaches and the players. Texas is really nice.”

Cleveland isn’t sure which Texas game he’ll attend this season, but he did say he wanted to make it down to Darrel K. Royal Texas-Memorial Stadium this season, possibly with Weathersby, who Cleveland said isn’t putting pressure on him to look toward Texas.

“He talks to me about it and throws out Texas’ name here and there,” Cleveland said. “But it’s my decision.”

That decision will be made based primarily on the relationship he feels with that school’s coaching staff.

“I just want a coach that is going to be 100 percent with me and one that can get me to the next level,” he said. “Education comes first to so that’s important.”

Westfield runs a spread offense but Cleveland said it didn’t matter to him what type of system he played in. The Longhorns are expected to run some variation of a pro style offense.

Briefly

No real surprise here but I touched base with five-star Texas A&M offensive tackle commitment Greg Little (Allen, Texas) to see if he had any plans on visiting anywhere else aside from College Station this season.

Allen, the No. 1 OT and No. 3 player in 2016, said he wouldn’t be.

The Longhorns were fighting an uphill battle with him from Day 1.
