Newsome discusses OU-Texas

While there is concern that current commit four-star wide receiver John Burt (Tallahassee, Florida) may flip his commitment elsewhere, the Texas coaching staff is telling four-star wide receiver Ryan Newsome (Aledo, Texas) that he is their top priority at wide receiver.

“[The coaches say] they want and need me,” Newsome said. “I’m their number one guy for receiver.”

While Newsome took a trip to Ole Miss last weekend, one that he enjoyed because of the crazy atmosphere and coaching staff, he likes what the Longhorns are telling him.

“Well, it makes you feel like a priority,” Newsome said. “That’s rare in the process.”

The Texas coaches like what they’re seeing from the 5-foot-8 wide receiver from Aledo. Newsome said that he is playing well this season.

“I don’t know my stats exactly but I’m pretty sure I have 23 catches,” he said. “[I have] well over 1,000 all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns.”

Newsome also said that he’s looking forward to the OU-Texas game but won’t be able to attend the game as he will be taking the SAT Saturday. But that didn’t stop him from talking about the rivalry game this weekend.

“[The Longhorns] will compete, they’ll be fired up,” Newsome said. “[And Oklahoma is] going to come out firing. They will be amped up and ready to play.”

Newsome refused to play favorites as he didn’t pick who would win but he said he hopes to see a good game Saturday.

Hamilton talks season and Longhorns

2016 linebacker La’Darius Hamilton (Corrigan, Texas) has been playing well this season. The linebacker prospect is hoping his play is attracting some suitors as he hopes to get an offer from someone soon.

“[The season’s] been really good so far,” Hamilton said. “I’m leading the team with tackles right now. We’ve been playing great. We have an average of 68 points a game and an undefeated record.”

“[My goals are to] continue winning of course,” Hamilton added. “Also, I would like to get my first offer from someone.”

Hamilton continued by saying that he is interested in Arkansas, Texas, UCLA and Utah State. He also said that he has recently talked to the Longhorns staff.

“I talked to Coach Koenning,” Hamilton said. “We talked mostly about how I was doing and what I thought about the program.”

Hamilton echoed the thoughts of other prospects and fans about the current state of the program.

“I’m impressed by how good the defense is playing but the offense isn’t doing so good right now,” he said.

Despite the offensive struggles, Hamilton thinks the Longhorns will be able to handle the Sooners Saturday.

“I honestly think they are going to beat them,” Hamilton said. “I would be surprised if they lost.

Quick Note-Weathersby update

I got an opportunity to have a short talk with Texas commit four-star offensive tackle Toby Weathersby a few weeks ago. Weathersby didn’t talk for long but he did provide a few nuggets worth sharing.

Weathersby said that he and his team [Westfield] have been playing pretty good this season. The Mustangs are currently 4-1 overall and 2-0 in district.

“[The season’s] going well, man, can’t complain. [We are] 1-0 in district,” Weathersby said at the time.

Weathersby added that he doesn’t have any lofty goals but that he just wants to go out and play the game on Friday night’s.

“[My goal is] just to ball,” Weathersby said.

Weathersby said that he’s been watching the Longhorns and has noticed some improvements despite their losses this season. Weathersby said that he expects Texas to keep getting better throughout the season.

“They’ll gradually get better from [those losses they’ve taken],” Weathersby said.

Weathersby didn’t get an opportunity to say if he’s been talking with the coaching staff nor did he say if he’d be in Austin anytime soon as the conversation was cut short.
