Cherry On Top for Texas

Lakeland (Fla) Victory Christian standout middle linebacker Cecil Cherry goes in depth on the Longhorns and Charlie Strong. The Tennessee soft verbal checks in at 6-foot, 230-pounds and is the No 18 ranked player at his respective position.

Cecil Cherry recently made his official visit to check out Texas and coach Charlie Strong. After being considered a Tennessee lock for months, it now appears the Longhorns are the team to beat for his services.

"Coach [Charlie] Strong is an awesome man," Cherry said. "He shows you what you have to do to start and plus he's the head coach and linebacker guy. He cares about his players not just on the field but off. He's a man of his word, and he understands the type of player I am coming from Florida and a little town called Frostproof. All I have seen my whole life is orange trees, and I am trying to make it out of here. Plus, he's a defensive minded coach and he loves the physical linebackers like me, like Ray Lewis."

Some people play the game because they want to or as a hobby. For Cherry, it's a way of life, a way of putting his family name on the map.

"I have a chance to put the Cherry family name on the map," Cherry said. I am going to be the first to do it. Everyone might hate me for the move but as long as God and my dad and mom and family support me here I'm good. I am straight because I am going to play ball and big time players make big time plays."

Where does Texas stand for Cherry? He had a clear message for the Longhorn nation.

"Hook'em," Cherry said. "They stand No 1 for me. My game is physical, and I try to end career's that's what my daddy taught me since little league. The Texas staff and coach Strong I believe want killers like me and ball players. That's why he came to Florida to get some players, but people have to understand he's a black head coach that's the head coach for the Longhorns. He is going to turn that program around, and he did it everywhere he's been. It's no different, everyone knows what he's going to do and that's why people are scared of a player like me because I can make a big impact. Every where coach Strong has been the defense is strong and sets you up for the league not just to win a national championship. He doesn't just fare about football he cares about your school work. He said you making plays speaks for itself, and I need players like you. I am going to make a big impact for my uncle Bobby Cherry, my dad, my mom and family and the people who supported me and for my little city of Frostproof, God and the world. They are number one and Hook'em."
