Old SWC Duel in Texas Bowl

For the third straight season the Longhorns won’t have to leave state lines to play in their bowl game.

Texas (6-6), which won three of its final four games to become bowl eligible, will face Arkansas (6-6) in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium in Houston on Dec. 29.

Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m., according to the Texas Bowl website. Texas will be the home team and occupy the east side of the stadium.

These two old Southwest Conference foes, which first played each other in 1894, aren’t scheduled to play each other in the regular season until Texas travels to Fayetteville on Sept. 11, 2021. The last time they played was in 2008 when the No. 7 Longhorns crushed Arkansas in Austin 52-10. Texas leads the all-time series 56-21.

This will be the third straight season that Texas stays inside the state to play a bowl game. The Longhorns have played in the Alamo Bowl the last two seasons, losing to Oregon in 2013 (30-7) and beating Oregon State (31-27) in 2012.

Arkansas comes into the game having lost its regular season finale, 21-14 at Missouri. But the Razorbacks collected two impressive wins prior to that with shutouts over LSU (17-0) and Ole Miss (30-0).

Brett Bielema’s squad is paced by the largest offensive line in all of football – college or pro – average 325 pounds and are all above 6-foot-5. They help open holes for a run game that produces 220.2 yards per game.

Arkansas has two backs that have gone over the 1,000-yard rushing mark. J Williams has 1,085 yards and 11 touchdowns, while former Longhorns RB target Alex Collins has 1,024 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Razorback quarterback Brandon Allen has thrown for 2,125 yards and 18 touchdowns, with only five interceptions on 316 attempts.

The greater Houston area is a recruiting hotbed for both schools and will present both programs with a great opportunity to make a lasting impression on prospects from the area.

Arkansas travels well but the Longhorns should have a bit of a home field advantage with Houston being home to the largest number of Texas Exes outside of Austin.
