When Merrick called back he actually said that Watson called him to clarify something, which happened to be the exact reasons why I was calling: Is he looking around at other schools who are surely going to give him a full ride? Talk about a great time to call.
"Coach Watson had also gotten calls about me getting calls from other schools and saying that I wasn't interested in the scholarship," Merrick said. "I just reassured him that there is no truth to that at all and that i'm all in with Texas."
To make things clear, other schools are showing interest in him but he's not showing interest back. As he said, it would take something major to keep him from joining the Longhorns.
Merrick said that Watson stopped by for an in-home visit on Tuesday and that things could not have gone any better.
"Coach Watson has come by multiple times, just one home visit though," he said. "This week Tuesday [for the in-home] he just wanted to get to know my family, hang out with me and my coaches," Merrick said. "Then we started to talk football more. I learned how he coaches. He kind of tested me on some stuff.
Merrick, who has long rooted for Texas even though his father played football at Virginia, said he's never felt more strongly about his decision to commit to Texas than now.
"I'm just much more comfortable with Coach Watson," he said. "There is just nothing that is negative about anything with the coaching staff, the university and playing football for them. That's why I'm as excited now as ever."
