Longhorns Lose a 2015 Commitment

Four-star offensive tackle Toby Weathersby (Houston/Westfield), the No. 1 tackle in Texas, tells HornsDigest that he has decommitted from the Longhorns.

“I just couldn’t see myself there anymore,” he said.

But why? Could it have had something to do with Texas having six other offensive line commitments in 2015?

“LOL the last thing is for me to worry about competition,” he said.

When pressed for an explanation Weathersby responded, “My academics and just seeing myself living there for the next four years.”

Weathersby was one of Texas’ longest-tenured commitments in 2015 having given his verbal pledge on March 22.

The 6-foot-5, 280-pound Weathersby is the No. 10 OT and No. 113 player overall.

He immediately becomes one of the top uncommitted offensive linemen in the country with offers from the likes of Florida, Maryland, Michigan State, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Wake Forest.

This was the second bit of bad news for the Longhorns on Monday as four-star linebacker Darrin Kirkland decided to stay a little closer to home in Indianapolis and commit to Tennessee.

For those looking at this with a glass-half-full mentality, the Longhorns, as stated earlier, still have six offensive linemen committed in 2015 in JUCO tackles Brandon Hodges and Tristan Nickelson, as well as Connor Williams, Garrett Thomas, Ronnie Major and Patrick Vahe.

On top of that, Texas will have all five offensive line starters returning next season. No one is expecting that same group to start the season opener at Notre Dame on Sept. 5 but their return, regardless of who starts, will help supply Texas with plenty of depth along with returnees in Jake Raulerson, Darius James, Desmond Harrison, Elijah Rodriguez, Jake McMillon, Alex Anderson, Terrell Cuney and Curtis Riser.

Texas will have to wait and see what develops the rest of the week as five-star linebacker Malik Jefferson (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet) will announce on Dec. 19 as well as his teammate, four-star athlete DeAndre McNeal.

The Longhorns are finalists for both players, though, there are uneasy feelings amongst Texas fans about them joining UT right now.

Texas is left with 18 commitments in 2015.
