Instant Analysis: DeAndre McNeal to Texas

With 4-star WR DeAndre McNeal committing to Texas, the Longhorns pick up an exceptional, 6-2, 215-pound athlete who could easily play linebacker or receiver.

IMPACT ON THE FIELD:With seniors John Harris and Jaxon Shipley moving on from the Texas receiving corps, there is opportunity for McNeal. Heck, Charlie Strong promised McNeal the first pass thrown in next year's season opener at Notre Dame would go to him.

While McNeal did most of his damage as a linebacker, his first love is playing receiver. And he's a fast, thickly muscled, pass-catcher who might remind some of Baylor's Antwan Goodley.

IMPACT OFF THE FIELD: Getting an athlete like McNeal would help make any recruiting class because of McNeal's athletic versatility.

But for Charlie Strong, at a time when he could use a head-to-head recruiting win over Texas A&M and Kevin Sumlin, this is big. It's big in terms of adding talent to a program, and for Strong, it's big in terms of sending a message to other current and future prospects in Texas as well as the state's high school coaches.
