Malik Jefferson Talks UT Commitment Decision

Five-star LB Malik Jefferson talks about his decision to commit to the Longhorns

What is it about Charlie Strong that makes you so confident in your decision?

"He's real. You can't deny that ever."

***

When did you make this decision?

"I made it Friday night. No, sorry, I made it last night [Thursday]. I meditated, thought about it and figured out what was the best fit for me. Everything eventually worked out for itself."

***

When did you tell the Texas coaching staff of your decision and what was their reaction?

"I told the coaching staff [Thursday] and they were really happy. Coach Strong couldn't believe it. Coach Strong told me he really wants me to be a leader. I told him that I wanted to start something new and get this thing going."

***

What's your message for Longhorns fans?

"Let's get it."

***

How much did you and DeAndre want to play together?

"We wanted to play together a lot. It just happened one night we were hanging out and we were like, 'Hey, we are going to the same school!" Because honestly I didn't think we were going to go to the same school. I told him that it was OK. We eventually talked about it and he said 'I want to go to Texas.' And I said I wanted to go to Texas to."

***

Where did you think DeAndre was going to go?

"I thought he was initially going to go to UCLA. He loved his visit. I loved my visit too but I knew it was too far."

***

How close was this decision for you?

"It was really hard. I couldn't go back-and-forth once the decision was finalized. Once I figured everything out on paper, I was good."

***

What about telling Texas A&M's coaches?

"It was tough. [Sumlin] just couldn't believe it because they thought they had me in the bag this whole time. I thought he was 100 percent when I first started with them. But now things just flipped the last second."

***

They will probably still try to work on you though.

"I'm pretty sure they will but I am 100 percent committed to Texas. Somebody needs to start something so I am going to start it now."

***

What about trying to get some of those A&M commitments that you are so close with over to Texas?

"Texas has its own name, and Texas makes its own name. So I'm saying they can do whatever they want. I'm not persuading anybody to do anything."

***

Was the defensive coordinator thing at Texas A&M a deal breaker?

"Yeah it kind of was because you want to know who is going to be your coach. It's just a gamble. To be comfortable in a situation like that makes a big difference."

***

How big of a relief is this to have everything behind you?

"It's really big. I can finally rep my school that I am going to. I am no longer a Poteet Pirate but that's OK."

***

What's the plan? When will you head down there?

"I'm not sure. I might go down there to see my godfather this weekend. It would be pretty cool to see him and tell him the good news."

***

What about trying to get guys like Kris Boyd and Holton Hill?

"Like I said, Texas is going to be Texas. They have a name for themselves. If they want to come join, come join. But I'm not going to sit there and recruit them if they are committed to another program. That's not the right thing to do."
