Cameron Hampton Transferring

Freshman LB Cameron Hampton will transfer to Lamar, per the Cardinals athletic website.

Here's what Lamar's press release said:

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar head football coach Ray Woodard added his third transfer to the roster Tuesday morning with the addition of former Texas linebacker Cameron Hampton. A former standout at Dallas Carter High School, Hampton utilized his redshirt with the Longhorns this past season.

"We are very excited about the addition of Cameron," said Woodard. "He was a highly recruited player coming out of high school. He brings good size and speed to the position and should push for playing time immediately."

A two-time all-district selection, Hampton earned honorable mention all-state honors as a senior in high school. He was rated as the No. 57 player in the nation coming out of high school, and named to the Austin American-Statesman's Fab 55. In addition to his ranking by rivals, he was considered the No. 17 inside linebacker prospect according to ESPN, and ranked as high as the No. 3 recruit at his position by Dave Campbell's Texas Football.

All of his honors came following a senior season that saw him record 93 tackles and 15 sacks during the regular season. Hampton was a key figure in a defense that surrendered only 13.1 points per game. That defense recorded a seven-game stretch that included six single-digit performances, including three shutouts.

His senior numbers came on the heels of a junior campaign that saw him post 154 tackles. Hampton wrapped up his three-year varsity career with 322 total tackles.

My Take:

I thought Hampton showed flashes in high school of the type of talent he could be, but you've got to remember that he transferred from Cedar Hill as a sophomore because he couldn't find his way on the field for those Longhorns either. This is a better situation for him with the addition of Malik, Cam, Cecil, Breckyn and then the leftovers on the roster. Playing time was going to be tough for him to come by next year too.

How does this change things from a recruiting standpoint? Well it could open the door for another player to squeeze in this class, which, considering how quickly things could fill up, isn't a bad thing at all.
