"Sometimes in life you have to listen to your heart instead of your mind, and I have decided to move on a play my last year elsewhere," McFarland said in a statement. "It was a tough decision because I love Texas, and I've met a lot of great people who have made a tremendous impact in my life. I want thank Coach (Charlie) Strong and the staff for allowing me the opportunity to play at UT. It has truly been a privilege. I am a Texas alumnus now, I have my degree, and I will forever be a Longhorn."
McFarland played in 36 career games, including eight starts, and caught 19 passes for 178 yards and three TDs. As a junior in 2014, he played in all 13 games with four starts and had 11 receptions for 53 yards and two TDs.
He is a two-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection and graduated in May 2014 with a degree in applied learning and development.Original story from Tuesday night
Talked to a source very close to the situation Tuesday night who said to be prepared for a half dozen or so current members of the Longhorns' roster to transfer out of the program.
The source said one of those leaving the program is TE M.J. McFarland, who graduated in the spring and plans to use a graduate transfer for his final year of eligibility. UTEP is getting strong consideration from McFarland, who grew up in El Paso, the source said.
McFarland, who had 11 catches for 53 yards and 2 TDs in 2014, is a good kid. Wish him well.
