HD Roundtable: Focusing In On Junior Day

Question: It's hard to divvy up time on junior days because there are so many recruits on campus at the same time. But if you were Texas' coaching staff, which five recruits would you make sure you spent a little more time with than others?

William Wilkerson

DT Ed Oliver – Depending on who you talk to Oliver could be the No. 1 defensive player in the state. As it stands, it would appear that the Longhorns have some ground to make up on perceived favorite LSU. If he makes it down to Austin, Texas needs to roll out the red carpet.

WR Trent’Davian Dickson – The former Baylor commitment could very well be the No. 1 WR in the state. He’s a dynamic playmaker and someone the Longhorns need to pay special attention to if he makes it down this weekend. If Collin Johnson and Reggie Hemphill knew what was best for them, they’d try to recruit him as well.

LB Dontavious Jackson – Jackson visited Texas a couple of times last year hoping to get a Texas offer, but it didn’t come until just a few weeks ago. I’m not sure if waiting to offer Jackson took some of his excitement for the program away; he wracked up quite the offers list prior to UT offering. Regardless, the Longhorns need to let him know how much he’s wanted and needed despite signing quite possibly the best LBs class in the country in 2015.

RB Trayveon Williams – He recently named TCU his leader after attending the Horned Frogs’ Junior Day. The Longhorns need to make a strong statement if they want the talented RB from Houston C.E. King.

S Eric Monroe – Oh man, is this kid good. Longhorns just got two good ones in 2015 and should add another big name to the fold in 2016 at safety. Will Monroe be that recruit?

My top target for the weekend would be safety Eric Monroe, who is one of the top defensive players in attendance and my vote for most elite defensive back prospect in attendance. The Longhorns cleaned up at cornerback in the 2015 class, and now is the time to load up at safety. There are plenty of talented safeties in the 2016 class, and Eric Monroe is possibly the best of the bunch.

If defensive lineman Ed Oliver makes it in, Texas should show him plenty of love to make up for any time lost. It's pretty widely known that LSU is the team to beat right now, and with offers from around the country, the Horns need to start working this recruitment ASAP if they have a chance to land him next February.

There are a few really talented linebackers who will be in attendance, including Dontavious Jackson and Jordan Carmouche, but I believe that Manor linebacker Erick Fowler sits atop the list. He is one of the best linebackers in the Lone Star State and potentially even in the country. He's a very skilled prospect who can move well and rush the passer, and could even grow into a defensive end.

The Longhorns need to take a couple of running backs in the 2016 class, and while many of the prospects on the board have either speed or power, Beaumont Central's Devwah Whaley has the perfect combination of both. He's currently ranked as the third best running back in Texas and the Midlands, and the staff should be fighting to lock up the top five players at every position.

At this point, I would pick who I believe to be the best player left on this list: wide receiver Devin Duvernay out of Sachse. The Horns are in very good position at the receiver position with commitments from Reggie Hemphill and Collin Johnson, but I think Duvernay requires the special attention on talent alone. If he commits, Texas could be finished at the WR position (though I have to note that Wichita Falls Rider's T.J. Vasher is a pretty special player, too.)

**Side note: if an elite quarterback prospect surprises everyone and shows up for Junior Day this weekend, he becomes the top priority, in my opinion: Dwayne Haskins Jr., Shane Buechele, Tristen Wallace, or any of the athletes out of Florida. Texas coaches, love them up.

WR Tren'Davian Dickson

WR Devin Duvernay

LB Erick Fowler

S Eric Monroe

DT Ed Oliver

This list is void of what UT program’s needs may be, but it is the top rated guys per the Scout rankings coming in to the Junior Day.

Dickson and Duvernay are No. 1 and No. 2 in the state wide receiver rankings and it is a position that the ‘Horns already hold some nice commits from on the 2016 list, so may not be a necessary position of need, but both are special.

Fowler is a terrific defender as an edge guy. His highlight tape is full of sacks and tackles for loss.

Monroe will remind many folks of Holton Hill. Safety size, but corner skills.

Ed Oliver may be the most interesting name, because UT may have some makeup work to do here as most feel that the 5-star defensive tackle is an LSU lean at this point in his process.

With Shane Buechele already committing, that would shift my focus to other positions for this junior day event. With that in mind, here are my five ...

-- Jean Delance, OT, North Mesquite -- he's already committed to Oklahoma, but his repeated willingness to visit other schools suggests he hasn't shut down recruiting. Never a bad idea to concentrate on the best OT prospect on the visitors list.

-- Trayveon Williams, RB, Houston C.E. King -- if Texas really likes this guy, it better make it apparent this weekend. Williams named TCU his leader following last weekend's junior day trip. He was on commit watch entering that event.

-- Tren'Davian Dickson, WR, Navasota -- the state's top receiver and a recent decommit from Baylor, which ultimately may still be a factor in his recruitment considering its success with receivers/the passing game.

-- Ed Oliver, DT, Spring Westfield -- hmmm, perhaps the most interesting name on the list considering how little smoke there's been between Oliver and Texas. It's widely believed LSU is in the driver's seat, but if Oliver makes it to Austin, that has to be encouraging. You have to spend a ton of time with him as he's one of the top defensive playmakers in the nation.

-- This final spot, for me, would be between Fort Worth All Saints DT Mike Williams, Alief Elsik MLB Dontavious Jackson, and Manor DE Erick Fowler. Wherever you feel you biggest need is, I'd go in that direction.
