HD Debate: Surprise Defensive Player

Chip Brown and William Wilkerson debate which Longhorns defender will surprise in 2015.

Chip Brown

I hope I'm not getting yours and my hopes up unnecessarily when I say I think CB Sheroid Evans can be the John Harris of 2015.

Evans, like Harris, a forgotten 5th-year senior, battled a serious knee injury and missed the 2014 season. But he appears to be back to full strength.

Evans is everything you want in a corner - big, physical, long armed and possessing track speed.

Word is Evans is lighting it up in offseason workouts, is leading the position group drills with Duke Thomas and is commanding everyone's respect.

If Evans is 100 percent physically, I think he's a potential game-changer for Texas in the secondary.

He's as physical a corner in terms of putting his hands on a receiver and redirecting as Texas has had since Aaron Williams.

As a fifth-year senior, that kind of wisdom and want-to is invaluable from a coach's standpoint. Fifth-year seniors ride younger teammates about what's important to the team - not what the best bar is to find a co-ed when the lights come up at 2 am.

William Wilkerson

I’m going to go with a name that hasn’t been discussed all that much since he arrived on campus a few years ago: DE Bryce Cottrell.

Say what? But he’s only totaled 12 tackles (7 solo) in his two seasons as a Longhorn.

True. However, he no longer has to wait behind an all-conference caliber player and, perhaps more importantly, he’s really filled out his frame under Pat Moorer. He looks the part now.

On top of that, Cottrell is fully healthy at the moment. Caleb Bluiett and Quincy Vasser are both recovering from injuries. So this could give Cottrell a chance to gain an edge on them this spring.

And the rest of the depth chart at the position isn’t exactly overflowing with proven players. Reports are that Shiro Davis is looking really good right now, but he has yet to put together a full, dominant season. Naashon Hughes got yelled at more than any player in the program last season. Derick Roberson redshirted and Charles Omenihu isn’t on campus yet.

The opportunity is there for Cottrell to make a name for himself. I think he’ll make the most of it.
