HD Debate: Spring Game Starter at MLB?

William Wilkerson and Chip Brown give their take on who will start the Longhorns' spring game at middle linebacker.

Chip Brown

Obviously, the guys with the most experience and the odds-on favorites would be Dalton Santos or Peter Jinkens.

But I'm going with Tim Cole, a guy I've been intrigued by since he came out of Brenham. We obviously haven't seen Cole on the field at MLB, because Steve Edmond never seemed to come off the field.

I think Cole's limited in terms of lateral quickness. But I think he's a student of the game and can play fast with his ability to study and diagnose plays pre-snap.

Santos has the most experience in the middle. Jinkens is cross-training to learn the middle, and Cole has been waiting for his opportunity in the middle.

I'll be surprised if Cole doesn't make his statement in the spring. Whether he could hold onto the starting job after freshmen Cecil Cherry and Anthony Wheeler come in June, remains to be seen.

But something tells me Cole will be the starter at MLB in the spring.

I think both Tim Cole and Peter Jinkens will close the gap substantially, but I’m just not sure either can overtake Dalton Santos for that starting spot for the spring game with less than a month to go.

Santos has played a lot of football at UT despite having to take on a reserve roll behind Steve Edmond. His biggest thing will be can he regain the form he had in 2013 when he started seven games and had 74 tackles, and shake off a forgettable 2014 campaign in which he only had 12 tackles?

I think he’ll have a much bigger impact on the team than he did last season for sure. He’ll likely surpass 12 tackles within Texas’ first few games. At least he better hope he does if he plans on keeping that spot.

What I think will happen is Santos will be the guy at MLB come the spring game and could get the nod for the Notre Dame game simply because I’m not so sure the staff is going to want to rely on the inexperience of Cole or even a true freshman in that position.

But I do think Cole and Jinkens will close the gap this spring and then Anthony Wheeler and Cecil Cherry will have an even bigger say once they get to campus. I think both of those players have incredibly bright futures and will play this season.
