New Texas president Gregory Fenves said Wednesday his office has recommended that beer and wine be sold at Longhorns' football games and that a 50/50 revenue split between athletics and academics of the $15 million paid annually to UT by ESPN for the Longhorn Network will continue.

Fenves said Wednesday his office has recommended to the UT System (chancellor William McRaven and Texas regents) that beer and wine be sold at Longhorns' football games.

Fenves said the university has "elaborate precautions in terms of safety and monitoring."

Texas currently sells beer and wine at other athletic events on campus, such as men's and women's basketball games as well as baseball. Fenves said Texas has had no problems with beer and wine sales at those events because of the precautions taken.

Fenves also said a $17 million tennis facility to be built east of I-35 (just north of Disch-Falk Field, across Comal from the softball stadium) "has been funded" by the university.

Athletic director Steve Patterson has continued to tell people inside and outside the department the money for a new tennis facility would have to be raised (even though the central university set that money aside 9 months ago), sources told

Fenves commended Patterson for his hires of football coach Charlie Strong and basketball coach Shaka Smart. But Fenves said athletics is the part of UT he is least familiar with and added "there's learning to be done" on his part.

"My vision for athletics - DeLoss Dodds talked about winning with integrity, and I think that is a fantastic vision for our athletics program.

"We want a top quality athletics program that recognizes we are a collegiate athletics program performing at the top of the collegiate environment. And we're going to do it with integrity, and I think our leadership strongly supports that vision and is carrying that out."

Fenves also said the 50-50 revenue split between academics and athletics of the $15 million paid annually to UT by ESPN for the Longhorn Network "will continue" beyond the initial, 5-year agreement made by former UT president Bill Powers and former AD DeLoss Dodds.
