UT Playing Catch-Up with Isaiah Chambers?

Are the Longhorns in the mix for this talented fur-star DE from Houston?

There seemed to be a collective sigh of relief from the Longhorns community that Texas’ coaching staff finally offered four-star DE Isaiah Chambers (Houston/MacArthur) in mid-May.

Now the question becomes: Can Texas make up for coming in after so many others?

“I was a little shocked that it came in late,” he said. “They never told me why it came in so late. They just told me that I had the offer and that’s the way I’m looking at it.”

Chambers, the No. 8 DE in the country and No. 79 player overall, already had offers from programs such as Baylor, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M, Arizona State, Boise State, Cal, Houston, Indiana, Kansas State, Kentucky, and North Texas.

He was the 11th of 12 defensive end offers the Longhorns have handed out in 2016.

So is Chambers holding the timing of the offer against Charlie Strong’s program?

“I am not holding back but it does show a little bit [about what they think about me],” he said. “UT is a good school that I am taking an interest in.”

Chambers visited UT shortly after picking up his offer where he, among other things, got to play with those baby tigers in Strong’s office.

“The visit was pretty cool. I liked everything about it,” he said. “I love the coaching staff and meeting those tigers was really cool.”

The coaching staff thinks he could end up being as dominant as another former Texas high school DE.

“They were just telling me how I am big, strong and fast,” Chambers said. “They think I can be the next Myles Garrett and would be a great addition to their program. They say I can come in and play both sides of the defensive line.”

Chambers sees similarities in the way he and Garrett pass rush.

“I am explosive and use my hands very well,” he said.

Chambers hopes to make it back to Texas this fall. Later this summer he plans on visiting Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.
