HD Mailbag: Longhorns Recruiting Overload

In this week's HD Mailbag I answer questions about Texas recruiting, baseball and much more.

QUESTION VIA HD SUBSCRIBER TheChauncey35:

Any word on the Acy situation? His announcement was scheduled twice in one week and still never happened.

ANSWER:

There were some things behind the scenes that changed some things up with this. I can’t get into them at this point.

Just know that the UT offer was an eye-opener for Acy. He really likes the Longhorns a lot.

Sometimes these things are all about timing.

QUESTION VIA HD SUBSCRIBER TheChauncey35:

With the younger Mayden seemingly extremely high on UT, could the possibility of playing with his brother bring Texas back into the picture for Jared, or is he that turned off to UT?

ANSWER:

I think the ship has long sailed between Jared and Texas.

QUESTION VIA HD SUBSCRIBER gregs1212:

Rumors that Brandon Jones was going to show today, did he? What do you hear around the Jeff McCullough situation visiting SOE again this weekend and then D Jackson at Bama with K Jones, as well as a few others?

Brings to mind my next question about the SEC, what are your thoughts around how it has impacted recruiting in the state since SOE moved? To me, I didn't think this many kids went out of state in past years. Is it them moving there and opening flood gates because now kids are getting to see these teams more regularly or is it that conference is looked upon being a step above the Big 12?

ANSWER:

I don’t believe Jones made it.

From what I hear the Longhorns feel like they are in good shape with McCulloch. His visit to A&M shouldn’t come as a surprise. Nor should Dontavious’ to Bama. They are big-time players who are enjoying the process.

To your last point, I think it is a mixture of the two points you brought up.

The SEC has always recruited this state really well but there haven’t been this many high-end guys leaving for the SEC. What you said makes a lot of sense and I believe those are reasons for this rise in Texas kids going to SEC schools.

When Texas and OU get back to where they once were I think that will slow the momentum a bit.

QUESTION VIA HD SUBSCRIBER TimmyLonghorn:

Why does it seem 2017 recruits are more positive on Texas than 2016 recruits???

ANSWER:

One reason is the staff has had more time at Texas and has familiarized themselves with these recruits a lot more.

Strong and his staff came in at the exact time when a lot of these kids start to really get serious about recruiting. They see what Strong and his staff represent and the direction of the program.

Recruits are loving what they are seeing and I think it will get even better if the product on the field improves this season. I think the 2017 class is the one the staff really has its eye on as a turning point for the program.

QUESTION VIA HD SUBSCRIBER YoungHookEm:

I want to hear about Devin Duvernay. Has this kid spent time at Texas? Is he going to visit this summer or before NSD and do you think is he interested in the longhorns or is he a longshot that won't happen? For some reason 247 sports has him leaning towards UT.

ANSWER:

Devin has visited UT before but it’s been a while. He told me at the Texas Relays that he had every intention of visiting the Longhorns this summer.

Duvernay has a great relationship with Jay Norvell, who recruited him hard at OU. That helps. He’s a smart kid who is really covering all his bases with this process.

I suspect he’ll visit before the summer is over as well as for a game at some point in the fall. I wouldn’t say UT is the outright leader, but Texas is definitely in the mix.

QUESTION VIA HD SUBSCRIBER YoungHookEm:

1.) Thoughts on Marvin Wilson? Are we his top team still? He said we were last year at UTL.

2.) Brandon Jones how high on his list do you think we are?

3.) who do you think we have the best shot at getting? Eric Monroe, Deontay Anderson or Brandon Jones?

ANSWER:

Things have changed with Wilson simply because more teams have gotten involved. UT is in the mix but there are several others up there now (LSU, A&M, etc.). But he’s a big target at a position of need. UT will do its best.

I think Texas is in Jones’ Top 2 right now to be frank.

Of those three I’d say Jones at this point in time.

QUESTION VIA HD SUBSCRIBER WilcoTex:

Any thoughts on number of commits TX gets between end of camps and start of fall practice? Average star rating of such commits? I won't ask for names.

ANSWER:

If I set the over/under at 2.5 I’d probably go under, but that’s not because I don’t think UT isn’t in good shape with some recruits. It’s more because I think the guys they are in good standing with just aren’t ready yet.

If there are commits I would put their average star rating at about 3.5

QUESTION VIA HD SUBSCRIBER Pbayes:

When is Under The Lights (UTL) camp ?

How many players expected ?

I'm sure some offers will go out but can we expect any commits ?

ANSWER:

I can’t really talk about UTL all that much at the moment. There are some things being discussed that we have to hold off on for the time being. But we’ll let you know soon, I promise.

QUESTION VIA HD SUBSCRIBER Possumlevine:

are the coaches gonna move into the dorms again this year in August?

ANSWER:

They haven’t given us any indication of that yet. But we will definitely find out for you. I thought that was a pretty cool deal last year.

QUESTION VIA HD SUBSCRIBER KEL17:

I would ask whether Jean Delance was a silent commit but that defeats the purpose of being a silent commit. I believe he is because everyone knows what the hashtag #LetsRide means at UT so i think he is a silent commit or at least has Texas #1 on the list. Your thoughts?

ANSWER:

I do think that things are trending in the right direction with Texas right now, no doubt. Do I think he’s to that point of being a silent commit? Not yet. I do think he’ll take other visits, but believe those close to him want him at UT.

QUESTION VIA HD SUBSCRIBER jmf1973:

Hey William, thanks for the mailbag. This question might be better in a chat, but the timing of the MLB draft felt like it didn't align with a current chat. Can you please tell us which UT signees were drafted? Also, which ones do you expect to honor their commitment to UT? Will any if these true freshmen make immediate contributions by playing in 2016?

What's happening with UT tennis? Any word on a new coach or facilities?

Anything new on fundraising? Are there more people committing to give to endowments? If so, what sport? Thanks for your answers!

ANSWER:

Outfielder Ben Johnson (Royals) and shortstop C.J. Hinojosa (Giants) were both selected in the 11th round.

Both have since decided to forgo senior seasons.

Pitcher Kirby Bellow was selected by the Diamondbacks in the 26th round while second baseman Brooks Marlow was selected by the Astros in the 29th round.

Four 2015 signees were also drafted – infielder Kody Clemens (35th round to Astros), infielder Matthew Schmidt (37th round to Yankees), outfielder Tyler Rand (39th round to Rays), and RHP Nolan Kingham (Brewers). They have until July 17 to sign.

The one that I thought was going to get drafted much higher than he was taken was Kingham. He’s a future ace. I think all of the high schoolers will make it to campus.

Chip is the man on all things tennis and fundraising, so he’d be better suited to answer this question. I do know that things aren’t looking good with the tennis program right now.

Thanks for your question.
