Texas Under the Lights: Dynamic Duo

On Saturday July 18th, Charlie Strong will hold the 2nd annual Under the Lights camp in Austin, Texas. Longhorn fans can expect in upwards of 150 high school football players from the classes of 2016, 2017 and 2018 to attend. I will take a look at two of the overall very best players in attendance regardless of position.

Texas is set for a huge weekend as some of the very best high school football players in America are on their way. Two players in particular that attended this event last year were Dontavious Jackson and Jeffrey McCulloch. Both players will once again attend the Under the Lights camp in 2015.

Jackson checks in at 6-foot-2, 240-pounds from Houston (Texas) Alief Elisk. He is the No 1 ranked inside linebacker in Texas; No 1 ranked in the Midland region, No three at his position and No 68 overall regardless of position. Jackson is a four-star defensive standout.

Jackson has offers from every major program in the country including Texas, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, , Michigan, LSU and Alabama.

Bio Blast

Jackson is a true middle linebacker and brings to the table the skills you are looking for at the position. He's a pretty physical player and has good size to stand up to down to down punishment in the middle of a defense. He diagnoses the play quickly and is tough to block. He gets downhill quickly, showing great vertical quickness to get to ball carriers. He is at his best against the run. He runs through tackles and is a sure finisher. – GP

2014: As a junior, Jackson recorded 165 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, one interception, and four forced fumbles.

2013: Jackson had a breakout sophomore season with 107 tackles.

As good as Jackson is on the inside Jeffrey McCulloch could be even better on the outside. He is from Houston (Texas) Davis and stands 6-foot-3, 230-pounds. McCulloch is the No 1 ranked outside linebacker in Texas, No 1 in the midland region, No five at his position and the No 60 ranked player regardless of his position. Jackson is a four-star player.

McCulloch is a high priority for Alabama, Baylor, LSU, Texas and Texas A&M. Both McCulloch and Jackson camped with the Longhorns.

Bio Blast

McCulloch has plus size and runs well for a linebacker. He is versatile and could probably play inside or outside, but excels on the edge of the defense in high school. He is very good at shedding blockers and playing in traffic. He is a solid hitter, needs to work more on form tackling at times instead of trying to deliver a knockout blow, but he is not shy to contact. He has ideal size, big-time athletic ability and makes plays. – GP

As a junior in 2014, McCulloch is credited with around 60 tackles, 18.5 tackles for a loss, 9.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 11 quarterback pressures to earn First Team All-District and Honorable Mention All-State honors.
