Chris Vaughn Optimistic about Young Texas DBs

Spent about 20 minutes with Chris Vaughn on Thursday at Longhorns Media Day and you can tell he is eager to see what these freshmen are about. He hasn't seen them in pads yet so he really isn't sure of exactly what he has. But he believes he is going to like what he sees.

One thing that stood out to me was when he got to talking about the younger guys and hinted at the fact that if there were some older/less experienced guys at about the same level as these true freshmen he was probably going to roll with the freshmen because they have more time on UT's campus to learn and mold into the player Vaughn wants them to become.

That said, he did say that Antwuan Davis and Bryson Echols weren't just going to roll over and let these true freshmen come in and take over. He thought that A. Davis had a really good spring and he could factor into this if he continues that this fall.

Expect P.J. Locke to play a lot of nickel, which seems to be Bonney's position right now. ALTHOUGH, Vaughn did say that "Nobody's job is secure" at the moment. He also thought PJ will help out "tremendously" on special teams.

The addition of DeShon Elliott has lit a fire under Jason Hall. Those two are very similar and Vaughn has told Hall he needs to step things up.

Vaughn said Holton Hill and D. Davis are both very similar - bigger DBs that can still run.

Kris Boyd - What he lacks in know-how and experience he more than makes up for by being an exceptional athlete.

Vaughn told me he used the UCLA blunder by Duke Thomas as a learning tool for the senior, and said that he has responded very well. Vaughn said he was sick himself after that play/game because he feels like he is a part of his DBs. Felt really bad for Duke. But Duke has really stepped up and taken ownership of the position. That was hard to do last year with Diggs. What that play did was reiterate to Duke how important the small things that Vaughn teaches really are. Vaughn said he told Duke not to lose his aggressive tendencies though.

Vaughn also said that what Haines might lack in certain areas [speed] he makes up for with his football IQ. That's what he is always around the ball. Expects Haines to make a big impact this season.
