Longhorns Media Day Q&A: Tyrone Swoopes

Longhorns quarterback Tyrone Swoopes fielded questions from the media on Thursday. Here's what last season's starting quarterback had to say.

Q:

Do you have to demand that this is your team?

A:

I don't think it's something you demand. I think it's something you have to earn through practice, fall camp and going out there earning it.

Q:

Where have you improved?

A:

I just worked on things I talked about with Coach Watson. Kind of being smarter with game management, throwing the ball away when needed, not being greedy and footwork. Stuff like that.

Q:

How has Jerrod Heard's competition helped push you?

A:

He has always been there. It has always been a friendly competition. We both want to play so we are doing everything we can and all we need to do to get on the field.

Q:

What did you see in your film from last year?

A:

Just like with any young quarterback, you see some high points and you see some low points. I have a lot of things to work on. I feel like coming into this year I will be different.

Q:

Was the bowl game painful?

A:

I think it was for everybody. Nobody likes to go out there and lost like that.

Q:

Did you use the bowl game as motivation during the off season?

A:

I wouldn't say it was just that game. The whole season was motivating. Nobody wants to finish under 500, so I think the whole season was motivating for everyone during spring and summer to help us work a little harder to get over the hump.

Q:

How do you feel hearing Texas doesn't have a quarterback?

A:

People are entitled to their own opinion. Nobody has played a down of football yet so nobody knows what's going to happen. For anyone to say that is fine. I cannot do anything about it until we step on the field.

Q:

Why are you the guy to lead this team?

A:

I have experience. I have been through some pretty low times so I know what those feel like and I don't want to be back there again. I feel like I know what needs to be done to get the team over the hump.

Q:

How did you handle the criticism from last season?

A:

I handled it pretty well. I hear it all but I don't let it bother me. It's a lot of people who sometimes don't know what they're talking about. The coaches always say the people in this building are the only ones who matter.

Q:

Does criticism tick you off?

A:

If anybody is playing a sport or doing a job and they're told they aren't doing a good job, of course it's going to make you mad. But I didn't let it affect me that much.

Q:

Do you use criticism as fuel?

A:

Yea, I know I am a lot better than the way I played last year. I'm ready to get the opportunity to prove it.

Q:

Do you know where the low points of your play last season came from?

A:

I feel like a lot of times last year I was thinking too much, trying to force things and not just going out and playing. I wasn't really thinking about anything in the Oklahoma game, I was just reading, reacting and playing. When I do that, I find it easier and more fun to play.

Q:

How do you become a leader?

A:

You have to learn the system because if you know what you're talking about, you can kind of coach up everybody else on what they need to know. So first, learning the system, then when you do that, you have to get our and encourage guys.

Q:

Does it bother you that you started 12 games and are in a quarterback competition?

A:

It doesn't bother me. I don't have a problem with competition. I think it's fun and makes everything more exciting. I don't have a problem with it.

Q:

Is it different with Jerrod in the mix? Do you find yourself paying attention a little more to what he is doing and making sure you have to do the same?

A:

Nobody really wants to have their job taken so you have to do what you have to do to stay on the field. I feel like if you start worrying about other people, then you're not really worried about yourself. I have been really working on me, working on myself and how to be better.
