40 Acres Forecast: Caleb Bluiett

We continue our look at scholarship players on Texas' 2015 roster with DE Caleb Bluiett.

Caleb Bluiett

6-foot-4/258 pounds

High School:

Beaumont, Texas/West Brook

2014 Review

Bluiett emerged as one of the must-watch players out of spring prior to the 2014 season, and performed admirably in the 12 games he played, mostly as a reserve, before missing the bowl game with a knee injury.

Bluiett was tied for fifth on the team in sacks (3.5) and ranked sixth in tackles for loss (7). One of his better games came in a start against Baylor when he had a career-high tying six tackles, including a sack.

2015 Preview

Bluiett missed the spring because of that knee injury, which required surgery around the turn of the new year. He’s dressing out with the team right now but is very limited with what he can do as he recovers from that injury. He was in The Pit on Friday

Bluiett is versatile enough to play either defensive end position. He’ll figure into the equation on the strong side with Vasser once he returns, and could be asked to play some Fox as well if necessary.

HD Projection

It’s hard to place to high of expectations on a player that is recovering from a serious knee injury, but Bluiett has the drive to come back and have a big impact on this defensive front. It all depends on when he returns to full health.

Pencil him in for numbers a little less than he had last summer – 37 tackles, 6.5 TFL, 3.5 sacks. That’s not to say he won’t return to form. But Texas has some new pieces at DE [Vasser, Derick Roberson, Charles Omenihu (though he might redshirt)] that it might want to give longer looks to.

How he ended up on the 40 Acres

Bluiett grew up a Longhorns fan so it was pretty much a no-brainer when he committed to Mack Brown in Brown’s office shortly after receiving an offer from Texas’ former head coach during Texas’ second Junior Day in Feb. 2011.
