40 Acres Forecast: John Burt

We continue our look at scholarship players on Texas' 2015 roster with freshman WR John Burt.

2015 Preview

Just how much do the Longhorns believe in John Burt? So much so that the freshman is already working with the first team.

When you see Burt work you see exactly why he’s already moved up that much on the depth chart. His long strides are tough for defensive backs to stay up with and he high-points the ball as well as anyone on the roster.

With Texas looking to replace all that John Harris and Jaxon Shipley did for the team a season ago, look for Burt to be in the mix early and often.

HD Projection

As stated above, Burt is already taking first-team reps and we don’t expect that to end anytime soon.

The only thing that might be holding Burt back right now is his rapport with Tyrone Swoopes and other Longhorns quarterbacks. He wasn’t an early enrollee so he, along with all the other freshmen wide receivers/tight ends, are trying to catch up to speed in that aspect.

Once that relationship builds and the QBs see what he is capable of doing they’ll want to get him the ball as much as possible.

Look for Burt to not only be a big target on third downs but his bread-and-butter could be his deep ball abilities and his jump ball capabilities in the red zone.

How he ended up on the 40 Acres

Getting Burt to stick with his commitment to Texas took some serious work by the Longhorns staff.

He had second-thoughts about his commitment in January and decided to decommit. At that point it appeared as though Auburn was going to be his landing point.

But the Longhorns weren’t about to just give up and instead went into full-court press mode, sending several coaches to his house for an in-home visit late in the process.

That trip seemed to clear things up for Burt, who eventually decided to recommit to Texas.
