There are few things that coaches love more than maximum effort on special teams, and that’s exactly what Colbert brought to UT last season when he tied for the team lead in special teams tackles with six.
But Colbert played a much larger roll in the Longhorns defense – at least initially – than some might have remembered. He actually started the first three games at safety (and then again against Iowa State), even intercepting a pass against UNT. He had a career-high five tackles and one QB pressure against the Cyclones.
He finished the season with 20 tackles – 16 solo, which was up from the 6 he had in 2013.***** 2015 Preview
The Longhorns have their two starting safeties in Jason Hall and Dylan Haines, and have two young players in DeShon Elliott and P.J. Locke that they like a lot. So Colbert has his work cut out for him.
However, he has had a really good fall camp so far and has taken advantage of Elliott being out with a toe injury. He just has to keep grinding and try to separate himself from the younger players because, as Chris Vaughn has mentioned, if an upperclassman and a freshman are close he will lean toward playing the younger player.***** HD Projection
He’s got sprinters speed and will knock the snot out of you when given the opportunity. If he doesn’t factor into the rotation all that much at safety, definitely expect him to be a head-hunter on special teams.
I think he will factor into the two-deep at safety and will serve as a dependable back up in the secondary. He’ll make a few plays this season that will make you notice him.***** How he ended up on the 40 Acres
This was a pretty crazy recruitment right here.
Colbert, a track star at Mineral Wells, was originally committed to Baylor but decided to flip his verbal pledge to UT after visiting Texas for its football banquet.
He was one of the top safeties in the state at the time who won the 3A state title in the 400 meters in 2011.***** High School Highlights
