40 Acres Forecast: Shiro Davis

We continue our look at scholarship players on Texas' 2015 roster with DE Shiro Davis.

Shiro Davis

6-foot-3/256 pounds

High School:

Shreveport, La./Woodlawn

2014 Review

Davis was the primary backup to Cedric Reed at defensive end for the Longhorns a season ago, although he did start four games.

He tallied 22 total tackles (12 solo), 5 tackles-for-loss, and 3.5 sacks.

His best two games came when he recorded a career-high six tackles against UCLA and then when he had four stops against Arkansas.

2015 Preview

This season is put-up or shut-up time for the former big-time recruit out of Louisiana.

He’d probably tell you that he’s yet to live up to the hype or even his own expectations so far at UT, but he has a monumental chance of erasing any doubt as to why he was so coveted out of high school this season.

Davis has put together a fantastic fall camp so far and has emerged as a leader on Texas’ defense. He’s competing for the starting LDE spot along with Bryce Cottrell and JUCO transfer Quincy Vasser.

HD Projection

This is the season that Davis puts everything together and emerges as the dominant force that many expected him to be the second he stepped on the 40 Acres.

He’ll start at LDE from Day 1. While Cottrell and Vasser will get their fair share of playing time, Davis will solidify himself as the go-to guy at the position.

His play should elevate/be elevated by the play of those around him. Texas’ defensive line should be the strength of the team with a plethora of defensive tackles capable of wrecking havoc in the middle of the line.

How he ended up on the 40 Acres

Davis surprised the country when he decided to flip his verbal pledge from LSU to Texas on National Signing Day and ended up signing with the Longhorns.

He built a really strong relationship with then-UT DT coach Bo Davis and had some concerns about signing with the Tigers.

There’s no question it was a big recruiting victory for Mack Brown.
