Redshirted.***** 2015 Preview
Gray has been moved from wide receiver to tight end to help with depth issues at his new position.
Months ago the Longhorns thought they’d be OK at TE with Devonaire Clarington in the fold along with the emergence of Andrew Beck, Blake Whiteley and then DeAndre McNeal coming in and being able to do some things at TE as well.
Fast-forward to present day and Whiteley is lost for the season with an ACL tear, Clarington isn’t enrolled yet, and McNeal has been moved to WR.
Now to further help with depth Texas has moved Caleb Bluiett back over to tight end from his defensive end position, and have firmly planted Alex De La Torre at the position for blocking purposes.***** HD Projection
Gray doesn’t have very much experience playing tight end and is extremely raw when it comes to the blocking responsibilities the position requires.
However, he is really the only true passing threat at the position now that Whiteley is down with injury and McNeal is moved to WR [for the time being at least].
That could create some opportunities for him if he can convince the staff that he is up to the task as far as blocking goes. But he’s got a ways to go there.
Until that gets shored up it’s hard to imagine Gray having that much of an impact on this team this season. If he can get the blocking down so it wouldn’t be a dead giveaway of it being a passing play when he’s in the game, then he could be a guy that could eventually create some matchup problems.
I think he’s a year away even though there are snaps to be had right now.***** How he ended up on the 40 Acres
Gray ended up committing to Texas the day after he was offered. He became the 15th pledge for UT in 2014.
