Shaka Smart and his coaching staff have the opportunity to not only knock off North Carolina at home on Saturday, but do so with four-star shooting guard Andrew Jones watching from inside the Frank Erwin Center.
Jones is one of Texas' top overall targets in 2016. With many thinking that he is a Kansas lean, the Longhorns need to take full advantage of this opportunity against a Top 10 team in North Carolina. Tip is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
Here's what Scout's Evan Daniels had to say about Jones after watching him at the Thanksgiving Hoopfest in Duncanville, Texas a few weeks ago:
Andrew Jones was one of the biggest post-July risers in the 2016 class and based on his two performances at the Hoopfest, Jones’ rise isn’t complete. Jones scored 66 points on 22-for-40 shooting from the field in games against Norman (Okla.) North and Katy (Tex.) Cy Lakes. Matched up against Trae Young and De’Aaron Fox, Jones proved he belonged. In fact, he did much more than that. Jones is a tremendous prospect and underrated at No. 30 in the country. Jones has developed as a lead guard. He made the right reads in pick and roll, played an efficient brand of basketball, especially in his second contest, and made 7 of his 15 three-point attempts in two games. He also showed potential on defense, made impressive passes and was tough to contain in transition.
In addition to Jones, the Longhorns will also host JUCO wing Bashir Ahmed (Hutchinson CC on Monday.
Ahmed is a 6-foot-7, 215-pound small forward from the Bronx that committed to Iona as part of its 2014 class.
He currently holds offers from Cincinnati, Houston, Oklahoma State, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John's and USC.
