Looking at the Hot Board: Defensive tackles and linebackers

National signing day is quickly approaching and the Longhorns have a few positions that will be interesting to follow.

Defensive tackle

Defensive tackle was already a spot Texas would look to build depth with the

2016 class after it was unable to sign a player at the position last cycle. The need intensified when redshirt junior defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway announced he would be foregoing his senior season for the NFL Draft.

Here’s a look at who’s on the HornsDigest Hot Board at defensive tackle. The Hot Board has 14 defensive tackles on it and out of those players only one is committed to Texas –three star Gerald Wilbon, who also plays offensive guard.

Out of the 14, seven have made commitments to other schools – Kendell Jones, Ed Oliver, Mike Williams, Jordan Elliott, Glen Logan, Keyshon Camp and Chris Daniels. However, the Longhorns may get official visits from Williams and Daniels.

The remaining six uncommitted recruits on the Hot Board are five-star Derrick Brown, four-star Stephon Taylor, four-star Ross Blacklock, four-star Tyrell Chavis, three-star D’Andre Christmas-Giles and three-star Marcel Southall.

Brown is a 6-foot-4, 322-pound defensive tackle from Buford, Georgia. He holds offers from Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Tennessee and a slew of others. His attention is away from the Longhorns.

Taylor, a 6-foot-6, 275-pound senior from New Orleans, holds offers from Auburn, LSU, Florida State, Ole Miss and others. His interest in Texas is low.

Blacklock is a 6-foot-3, 326-pound defensive tackle from Missouri City. He holds offers from LSU, TCU, Texas and many others. He currently doesn’t hold interest in the Longhorns.

Chavis is from Fork Union, Virginia. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound defensive tackle holds offers from Auburn, Miami, Penn State, Texas and others. He has medium interest in the Longhorns.

Christmas-Giles holds plenty of offers, including offers from LSU, Texas, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss and Tennessee. He has medium interest in the Longhorns.

Southall, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound senior, comes from Duncanville. He holds 19 offers, including offers from Florida, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. His interest in Texas is listed as medium.

There are eight linebackers on the Hot Board.  The Longhorns have one committed linebacker – three-star outside linebacker Demarco Boyd. Four of the eight are currently committed to other schools – Jordan Carmouche, Rahssan Thorton, Devin Bush, Jr. and David Reese.

Five-star Caleb Kelly planned to visit the Longhorns during the season but he didn’t. The 6-foot-2.5, 220-pound outside linebacker holds offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas.

Four-star Jeffery McCulloch is a 6-foot-2.5, 225-pound outside linebacker. He holds offers from a ton of schools and has medium interest in Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, Stanford and Texas.

Four-star Dontavious Jackson is Texas’ lone inside linebacker target. The 6-foot-1.5, 237-pound senior holds a slew of offers and has medium interest in Florida State, Michigan, Texas, Texas A&M and UCLA.

Today’s edition of Tweet’Em includes tweets from four-star running back Devwah Whaley, Texas commit four-star wide receiver Reggie Hemphill-Mapps, McCulloch and Jackson.
